Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney Club Notes

August 05, 2010
The club would like to send its sympathies to both the Arthur & Robinson families on their sad losses recently.

AGB Senior Ladies had a good win over Eire Og in the second game of the championship last week in Newtown on a score line of 4-13 to 0-09. Eire Og were first on the score sheet while it took AGB six attempts before they registered their first score. There were some great scores throughout the match with Captain Tanya Mc scoring an impressive 3-06. Particular well done must also go to both Aine's on the team. Aine Byrne covering every blade of grass marking her fellow county team-mate Keelin & making it impossible for her to lay her mark on the game as she does so often for the county team. While young Aine O Reilly, playing only her second senior championship game at the young age of 15 caused absolute havoc in the back line for Eire Og with her speedy runs through at goal and her ability to be in the right place all the time not to mention her cute accurate passes into her fellow team mates setting them up for great scores. Aine is a great addition to the senior team this year and certainly adds strength to the forward line. Jessie Mc was her usual self in the half forward line making it very hard for County Player Niamh Kelly to mark. One of her great attributes is her ability to win the ball in the air from any angle! Jessie scored a remarkable goal in the second half which certainly killed off any hope of a comeback for Eire Og. There was great defending & great work rate from the back line throughout the game which made scores hard to come by for Eire Og - many of their scores coming from frees rather than play. Well done also to Becky Condron who made her first senior championship appearance for the Gers coming on the second half in goal & played a blinder with her accurate strong kickouts. One thing about this squad - they never lack commitment and effort & with that win the girls have now secured their place in the semi final of the Senior A championship. They are due to play Roundwood on the 15th of August which will decide if they top their group. Training continues Friday night at 7.30 in Ballymoney where the girls know they have a lot of work to do if they are to go on to win THREE IN A ROW! AGB hope that Linda Dempsey, Rachel Byrne & Michelle Kinsella make a full and speedy recovery from their injuries so the panel is at full strength going forward.

AGB Junior Ladies team are scheduled to play Donard the Glen in Donard at 7.30 this Wednesday. John and Christy will be looking for a repeat performance from Viv Walshe who played a stormer in her first ladies championship match against Baltinglass. They will also be looking for some strong performances from Danny Brauders & Ciara McCleen in the forward line. They will welcome the return of Emer Flannery who was greatly missed in the 1st round. The junior team is a great chance for the girls to get more football and gain more experience helping them to make the senior panel. Please support the girls! Best of luck!

The senior men's team are taking on last year's county champions Rathnew this Sunday in Aughrim at 12pm in the last match of the group stages of the senior championship. Best of luck!!

AGB Juveniles
The Under 10 girls played their third blitz of the year last Saturday in Laragh. AGB entered two teams, a number of girls were away on holidays which meant each of the 13 players got plenty of football with a total of 140 minutes of football, remarkable for these girls who are all under 10 years of age! The girls put in some great performances throughout the day and got plenty of opportunity to practise all their new skills they have been learning in training and at the AGB summer camps. With powerful defensive play of the backs throughout the day and brilliant support play in the centre of midfield and the girls certainly had their scoring boots on with some brilliant goals and points scored in each of the games. The girls who played in goals were equally as impressive pulling off a number of fine saves not to mention their strong accurate kick-outs! We would like to say well done to Katie Hawthorne who played her first game for AGB! Training continues every Thursday on the juvenile pitch in Pearse Park at 5.45 -7. All new girls very welcome.

The Under 14 boys travelled to Carnew on Wednesday evening for a County League encounter. The boys have been in excellent footballing form of late and this continued with another comfortable victory. Both sides exchanged a couple of wides in the opening 5 mins before Arklow settled into their passing game and started putting scores on the board. Daire McBride opened the scoring with a well-taken point and John Paul Sheehan quickly added a goal and a point, leaving Arklow 2-2 up on 10 mins. JP latched onto an excellent ball from Adam Forde to score his first goal of the evening. On 12 mins Daire McBride received the ball from Paddy Sally passing quickly to Eoghan Doyle who calmly slotted the ball over the bar. Carnew then pressed hard for the final 10 mins of the half, but some excellent work by the backs kept their scores to 1 point on 23 mins. Christopher O'Brien did a great job of marshalling his defence, as did Captain Neil O'Reilly making sure enough players dropped back to help out the backs, Neil lead by example as all great capatins do!. Carnew came out strong in the second half and scored 5 unanswered points in the opening 5 mins. They had changed their formation somewhat and brought some of their stronger players into the play. Arklow soon came to terms with this and regained control of the game once more and played on their terms. Ciaran O'Reilly scored 2 goals in quick succession, the second a rocket of a shot beating the keeper on his near side. Carnew rallied somewhat and pressed for some scores attacking through the middle of the field. Arklow conceded a lot of frees in this passage of play and could have been punished by more than 2 points if Carnew. The final score of 6-7 to 0-8. Along with our good forward play, John O'Hallaron, Jay Wolohan and Jimmy Farrell were stand out players in our excellent back lines. Jack Jameson wasn't very busy but did pull of some fine saves when called upon and Jack Furlong and Paddy Mellon both had great games. So it was a happy bunch of player's coaches and parents who made their way back to Arklow. Many thanks to Carnew for their hospitality on the night, and the supporters who travelled to Carnew to cheer us on. The Under 16 boys were away to Kilanerin on Friday the 30th of August. We started the game against a deceptive but strong wind and Kilanerin were a physically bigger & faster team but the boys worked hard and kept themselves in the game with a half time score of 1-2 to Kilanerins 1-11. However we started well in the second half, making the best of the wind and we managed to end the game losing by the narrow margin of two points on a scorline of AGB 2-10 Kilanerin 1-15. We would like to thank Neill & Ciaran O'Reilly & Paddy Mellon for joining our team on the night.Team on the night - Ian Kelleher, Conor Doyle, Anto Doran, Aidan Delaney, Ciaran O'Reilly, Eoghan Carroll, Matthew Snell, Neill O'Reilly, Paudi Kelleher(0-3), Craig Kinssella(0-2), Darren O'Connor(1-0), Jordan Forde(0-3), Darragh Keenan, Martin Kenny(0-2), Paddy Power(1-0) & Paddy Mellon.
