Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney GAA Club notes

March 05, 2010
The men's team were back in action last Saturday. The 2010 Division 1 League began with a home game against Carnew Emmets. The team which is under new management were looking for a good start to the year. It was apparent from the throw-in that they were eager to impress. Philip Healy got the first score; further points from Stephen Hurley and Healy again had us in the lead before Stephen crashed the ball to the back of the net for a great goal. Twenty mins into the game Philip Healy received a serious injury. When play resumed Arklow made the most of the running going in at half-time 1-8 to 0-6 points up. Mid-way through the second half there were good scores from Philip Gleeson and the impressive Niall Mullet, kicking over his fourth point after he replaced the injured Philip Healy. When the final whistle went Arklow were ahead by a point only for the referee to declare the game a draw 1-13 to 1-13 each. Apart from the scorers there were good performances from Mervyn Travers, Barry Gatenby, Pat Egan, Philip Gleeson and man of the match Paul O'Donoghue. Scorers: P Healy 0-2, S Hurley 1-1, N Mullet 0-4, P O'Donogue 0-1, P Gleeson 0-1, C Hyland 0-2, A Brennan 0-1. Men's training is back in the gym this week: Thursday at 8.20pm.
The ladies team have been hitting the gym for the past two weeks to get fighting fit but training will resume back on the pitch this week. Training is on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8pm-9.30pm in Ballymoney. This Friday night training is on a 7pm followed by a senior match at 8pm. There is a junior match on Sunday 4.30pm.
Pearse Park was a hive of activity last weekend as AGB juveniles training got under way last weekend, children and parents alike catching up on what the others have been up to over the winter. The boys and girls U6 & U7 started their first training session on a fresh but bright Sunday morning with around 100 children turning up between both age groups.
It may have been cold but that did not deter our Under 9's from turning up in numbers on Friday the 26th. Firstly we noticed a huge change in our players from last season, as our little Under 8's are now bigger & determined Under 9's, those that spring to mind are Matt "lighting" Forde and Ryan"tackler"Tolan who were like terriers after the ball, not forgetting Caimin"defender"Kavanagh who made Pearse Cullen's job in goals easier. We'd like to welcome our new players to our team and going on Friday's performance you have a great future in football ahead of you.
Along with regular training the boys have been putting in an extra effort and attending the Wicklow Development Squad for the past few weeks travelling to GAA clubs all across Wicklow. A contingent of our Under 14 boys will be representing AGB as they march out as part of the Development Squad at the upcoming Wicklow v Carlow league match in Aughrim. So go on, give them a cheer!
The Girls training is now in its fourth week. They are putting in great commitment and hard work on Wednesday evening (5.15- 6.45)and Friday evenings ( 5.15-6.30) at the juvenile training pitch beside the astra turf pitch. It's great to see the girls improving their football skills and getting more confident on the ball in a fun & safe environment each week. The great numbers at training has given the management team great encouragement as they focus on the Wicklow Feile scheduled for the 28th March. Training is now also on Mondays from 6.00-7.15 in preparation for this competition. All new players very welcome.
Coaching Ireland, gave a workshop on The Female Athlete in the Gael Colaiste, last Tuesday which was well attend by our coaches, the swimming club and the athletics associations. More courses coming up check the website www.arklowgaa.ie for details.
