Wicklow mourns Ciaran Shannon
June 29, 2009
Wicklow GAA is mourning the passing of former county footballer Ciaran Shannon, who died following a tragic road accident on Saturday.
Aged just 37, Ciaran had been en route to a club league match when he was involved in a four-car smash on the Baltinglass to Blessington Road. He was driving one of two SUVs in the crash and his pregnant wife and three daughters, aged eight, six and four, were also in the car.
Ciaran had been on his way to Blessington for a game with his club Annacurra. Many of his distraught team-mates came upon the scene and watched in horror as he lost his battle for life on the roadside.
"Ciaran was a lovely person and very popular with everyone. He was a born leader on the field," said a devastated Annacurra GAA club chairman Martin Fitzgerald.
"His colleagues on the team stayed with him at the roadside to the end."
The deceased was a regular on the Wicklow senior team about a decade ago, and usually lined out at centre half forward.
His remains will arrive at Annacurra Church this evening at 8 o'clock with his funeral Mass taking place at 11am tomorrow.
May he rest in peace.
