O'Brien looks forward to qualifiers
June 19, 2009
Although disappointed with the defeat to Westmeath on Sunday, Wicklow chairman Andy O'Brien is still looking forward to his county's first round of the All-Ireland qualifiers next month.
O'Brien felt that the Garden men let a good chance of progression to the last four of the Leinster SFC slip at the weekend, but says it's not something everyone should mull over.
"At the end of the day we were unfortunate not to take the spoils today. We had enough of the play. It was in our grasp on a few occasions. But at the end of the day we cannot crib. It was there to be won, unfortunately we lost it.
O'Brien remains optimistic ahead of Mick O'Dwyer's team's chances in the backdoor, while also highlighting the importance of a 30-man squad at this stage in the season.
"It's on to the qualifiers now. We have a lot of injuries there to deal with. We need the few weeks to try and get these lads back.
"It's ironic that so many good players got so many injuries. It's a serious blow for us. The 30 players Micko has in training will be called on.
"People will say about having so many on the panel. This has proved we need a panel like that. So the qualifiers could prove interesting yet," the chairman concluded.
