Tom Ryan exonerates Dunne

September 14, 2007
It seems that Liam Dunne has had to wait a full 11 years to receive acknowledgement from Limerick quarters that he did not, in fact, break Gary Kirby's finger in the 1996 All-Ireland senior hurling final. Dunne raised the issue when writing in the Sunday Times ahead of the All-Ireland final between Kilkenny and Limerick. "If you asked the typical hurling follower what they remember from the last time Limerick were in the All-Ireland final 11 years ago, they'd probably say that Wexford won after having a man sent off and Gary Kirby broke his finger in the first couple of minutes," Dunne wrote. The Ourlart-the-Ballagh man recalled "A couple of seconds after we clashed under a dropping all, Kirby went out to the sideline and landed a free from about 70 metres. I remember his finger was cut and a lad came in with a towel at some stage later on to wipe away the blood. But he seemed to be fine, and played the whole match as if there was nothing wrong." In another Sunday newspaper on the weekend of the All-Ireland, the Limerick manager of the time, Tom Ryan confirmed that Gary had not broken a finger and as Dunne said, 'his finger was cut.'
