Athlone club notes

June 26, 2017

U11 Boys:
The U11 Boys were invited to take part in an U11 blitz in Mullingar on Sunday 25th last hosted by Mullingar Shamrocks. This was an extremely well run competition and featured storied clubs from all over the country with the likes of Salthill/Knocknacarra from Galway, St Colmcilles & Navan O'Mahony's from Meath, Killoe from Longford and Baltinglass from Wicklow in attendance as well as some local teams from Westmeath. With Westmeath playing in headquarters and the holiday season starting to take hold, the Athlone bus left down a large number of regulars and only able to tog out 12 players, including an u10!! There was a palpable sense of trepidation as we arrived in Springfield and saw that we were drawn with Erins Isle of Dublin, Salthill/Knocknacarra of Galway and Maynooth of Kildare. However, what the Athlone boys lacked in quantity, they more than made up for in quality of effort and desire and while they were well beaten by Erins Isle in the first game a draw versus Salthill in the second game and a very narrow defeat to Maynooth saw the lads through to a Shield semi-final versus Killucan. The lads produced a stunning performance in this game and led from pillar to post to set up a Shield final versus St Loman's of Mullingar. The final was another fabulous display by the lads and despite their bright red faces and aching limbs they worked incredibly hard for each other and deservedly came out as victors, thus securing the Shield. Great credit goes to these lads who showed that they are not over awed by anyone and simply put their heads down and got on with the job and all present were delighted that they received some silverware to bring back to Pairc Chiarain.

The 12 Athlone apostles were: John Fleming, Cillian Geary, Cathal Hardiman, Conor Hughes, Darragh Lough, Evan McMickan, Tiernan Mitchell, Luke Nicholson, Ruairi O'Duibhir, Ian Rushe, Shane Wheatley and Brandon Varszegi.

U12 Boys:
The Athlone boys travelled to Kinnegad on Wednesday last for the latest round of the U12 Westmeath League. As normal, there were two games, one for the U12s and one for the U11s. Athlone managed to tog out 31 players on the night and great credit must go to the parents for making the long trip on a week day.

The U12 game was played on the main pitch and it was truly a game of two halves. With a strong breeze blowing down the pitch, it was Athlone who dominated with the wind in the first half and led comfortably at the break. However, all present knew that the second half would be a different affair and so it proved. From the throw-in the Coralstown-Kinnegad lads attacked in waves but were met with determined defence from the visitors and despite conceding two goals before the midpoint of the second half the well drilled Athlone lads managed to tack on a few vital points to emerge victorious on a score line of 2-11 to 2-06. This was a really exciting game of football played by two very good teams and the Athlone boys left knowing that they had been in a game.

The U11 game proved to be more one sided as the visitors dominated from start to finish. They are really starting to gel as a group and are playing a lovely brand of football that is very pleasing on the eye. Fair play to the Coralstown-Kinnegad lads who kept going to the very end. Lesser teams might have dropped the heads but they were a credit to their club with the way they battled. Many thanks to the Coralstown-Kinnegad mentors for the games.

The Athlone panel on the night was: Brian Collins, Luke Farrell, Ciaran Finlay, Cillian Geary, Kyle Greene, Toby Heavey, Conor Hughes, Matthew Keane, Josh Kenny, Kyle Mahon, Ben Manning, Johnny Martin, Lorcan McCormack, Cillian McGowan, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Tiernan Mitchell, Ben Murray, Luke Nicholson, Luke O'Connell, Ruairi O'Duibhir, Daniel Omukoro, Piaras Rohan, Ian Rushe, Jason Rushe, Niall Tallon, Jason Ukatu, Brandon Varszegi, Luke Whelan and Brandon Wykes.
