Boston GAA club notes

Kerry 1-9 Gaels 0-12

Kerry had to settle for a draw in Boston. After leading all the way to the last kick of the game, against a strong Connemara Gaels side in the fifth round of the Senior Championship on a score of 1-9 to 0-12. Kerry got off to a much better start as they were ahead 1-1 in the opening minutes. A goal came when Graham Glynn was pulled down in the box, the resulting penalty was buried in the back of the net by Barry Croft. Shane Briggs added a point after taking a pass from Murtagh Condron. Paul Devane set up Graham Glynn and put Kerry ahead 1-2 to no score for the Gaels. Ciaran Killeen opened the Gaels account, the Gaels had a chance of a goal but Lee Stacey pulled off a point blank save. Robbie Croft had the score of the game as he ran through the Gaels defense and stuffed it over the bar. The Gaels responded with a point and Croft answered with a pointed free after twenty minutes gone and for the remainder of the half only one score came from Coleman Mulkerrins of the Gaels. So as the referee blew half time the score was Kerry 1-4 and Gaels 0-3. The reason for the low scoring was the strong wind at times as it did not know which way to blow but it did favor Kerry more than the Gaels.

In the second half Robbie Croft extended Kerry's lead to five points. Calium McCormack pulled one back for the Gaels. Noel Graham converted a free to leave three between the sides. Derek Nolan replaced Ian Whelan who picked up a leg injury. Kerry's next score came from Joey Fitzpatrick, he popped one over after taking a pass from Shane Briggs but the Gaels fought back and got the score down 1-7 to 0-8, with five minutes remaining both teams gave it everything they had. Kerry had to replace the injured Shane Briggs and Ian Whelan who got back into the game and got a black card. Graham Glynn and Robbie Croft added two points for Kerry while Noel Graham and Coleman Mulkerrins did likewise for the Gaels and with time ticking away Robbie Croft converted a free in injury time that looked like a win for the Kingdom but it was Coleman Mulkerrins who made it a draw in the last seconds of the game. One could say a fair result in the end, Kerry 1-9 & Gaels 0-12. Man of the match for Kerry was Paul Devane who covered every inch of ground and in doing so saved a certain goal in the process. Also playing well were, Shane Briggs, Graham Glynn, Robbie Croft, Murtagh Condron, Lee Stacey in goals, Joey Fitzpatrick, Mike Godley and Ian Whelan who is a tireless worker for his team.
