St Dympnas got their hands on their first piece of silverware this year

Fr O'Hanlon Cup Final

Sunday 12th October
St Dympnas 3-13 - 2-14 St Colmcilles

St Dympnas got their hands on their first piece of silverware this year with a hard fought 2 point victory over St Colmcilles in Oxhey Park on Sunday afternoon. It was Colmcilles who started the brighter of the teams and quickly got 2 scores on the board with no reply from the Luton team. Dympnas soon settled into the match though and tallied up a few scores of their own, the best of which coming from a fine Luke Moloney effort just inside the 45 metre line. Colmcilles still had control of the game and grabbed the first goal of the match shortly before half-time and went into the interval with a 5 point lead.
St Dympnas knew that they needed to strike the first blow of the Second Half to get back into it and that they did when after some great fielding in Full-Forward Cormac Healy fired a ferocious drive into the back of the net. This was quickly followed by 2 scores which seen the sides level for the first time at 1-09 a piece. Colmcilles finally burst into life 10 minutes into the second period when after some great build up play they scored their second goal of the game to regain the lead. Dympnas management duo of Gerry Naughton & Paul Gallen knew that changes had to be made if they were to win this game and they did just that bringing in Kevin Killian and Sean McGonagle into the forward line
and moving Captain Steve Doran to full back to try and cope with the lively St Albans full forward. This had an almost immediate impact when after some good movement from McGonagle, Moloney played a high ball in on top of Healy who managed to fist the ball into the net, bringing Dympnas to within a point of the St Albans side.
Points were exchanged at either end and Colmcilles still had the lead going into the last 5 minutes until another high ball into the square, this time by James McKenzie, was met by the fist of a Dympnas forward and into the back of the net it rolled. This was to prove decisive and despite a galliant late effort from St Colmcilles, St Dympnas held on to retain the Fr O'Hanlon Cup. Hertfordshire County Board Chairman John Gormley presented the Cup to winning Captain Steve Doran.
