Ulster club SFC: McFlynn downs Derrygonnelly

November 09, 2009
Loup (Derry) 1-10 Derrygonnelly (Fermanagh) 1-6 Loup progressed to the semi-finals of the Ulster club SFC when they saw off what ended up as disappointing challenge from Derrygonnelly yesterday afternoon at Celtic Park. The Fermanagh champions had given a good account of themselves during the opening half-hour to only trail a fancied Loup side by a single point at the break. However, the visitors failed to score again until the added minutes of the second-half when substitute Peter Gallagher bundled in a late consolation goal, as the points of Paul McFlynn down the other end beforehand proved decisive for the home side. Derrygonnelly registered the opening score when Ryan Jones sent over an accurate free, but Loup soon moved in front through Johnny McBride and Declan McVey. The Ernesiders refused to lie down though and two more Jones frees and a nice score from Kevin Cassidy helped edge them in front. McFlynn popped over the scores that put the would-be winners into a 0-7 to 0-6 lead for half-time and the same player extended Loup's lead after the break thanks to five points without response. McVey made up for a missed goal chance somewhat with a point moments later and when Aidan McAlynn's shot feel into the Derrygonnelly net Loup's place in the semi-finals against Kilcoo was confirmed, as Gallagher's late goal left his team four short in the end.
