Lidl National Football League Final

Tipperary Ladies Football will play Wexford in the Lidl National Football League Final on Sunday, April 30th at 4pm in Clane GAA, Co. Kildare. The team have an unbeaten record to date in the League and will hope to build on this on Sunday by capturing the title and with it promotion to Division 2 for 2018. All support is welcome.

 

 

Munster Under 16A Ladies Football Championship Final

Cork 4-12 Tipperary 3-7

 

The Tipperary Ladies Under 16 team travelled to Mallow on Easter Monday to play Cork in the Munster Ladies Gaelic Football A Final. Hopes were high following a victory over Kerry and a draw against Cork in the group stages and also considering Tipperary had won the last two All Ireland B championships at Under 14 level. There was a slight breeze favouring Cork in the first half but in general conditions were good. Tipperary made one change to the lineout with Carrie Davey replacing Emma Morrissey.

 

Cork got off to a great start with a point from a free in the second minute and followed up with another point and goal within the next two minutes. The Tipperary formation had seven defenders with Caitlin Kennedy as the sweeper and Alison Connolly at wing back however they struggled on kick-outs with Cork showing more aggression. Cork added another three points to register a total of 1-5 in the first ten minutes. In the fourteenth minute Tipperary opened their account with a point from Caoimhe Ryan and the game was flowing from end to end with Cork raising another white flag in the nineteenth minute. Tipperary were now coming more into the game and on the twenty first minute had a great goal from Caitlin Kennedy following an exchange of passes with Ava Fennessy and within a minute Jenny Irwin added a point to reduce the margin to four points. However, it was Cork who again gained momentum going on to score another 1-5 in the next eight minutes. As the game went into injury time Tipperary hit back with a goal from Angela McGuigan who pounced on a rebounded save following a superb 60 meter run by Caitlin Kennedy. Then in the second minute of injury time the Cork sub goalie deflected a Caoimhe Ryan shot over the bar leaving the half time score line Cork 2-11 Tipperary 2-3.

 

Tipperary made two changes at half time introducing Orla Winston for Anna Morris and Niamh Ryan for Leah Coen and reverted back to the standard formation of six forwards with Caitlin Kennedy and Niamh Ryan in the half forward line, Orla Winston in midfield and Alison Connolly and Carrie Davey in the half backline. Tipperary got off to a great start with a brace of points from Angela McGuigan in the first four minutes and in the thirty seventh minute Caitlin Kennedy was denied her second green flag with an excellent save from Jane Mulvihill in the Cork goal. Angela McGuigan reduced the margin to five points with a free in the thirty ninth minute and within a minute introduced Ellie Ryan for Caoimhe Ryan.

 

Tipperary were now enjoying a lot of possession with their defence on top and the game flowing from end to end after some persistent Cork fouling they were reduced to fourteen with midfielder, Faye Ahern sin binned. In the fourth seventh minute Tipperary were awarded a penalty after a foul on Ellie Ryan and Caitlin Kennedy scored her second goal after a scramble for the penalty save. The margin was now reduced to two points and the game was in the melting pot for the next four minutes. However, it was Cork who found a new lease of life and managed to register their first score for twenty four minutes with a goal, then a minute later were reduced to thirteen when wing back Sally McCarthy was sin binned. The game was finished as a contest when Cork extended their lead with another goal from the penalty spot. As the game entered injury time the teams exchanged points with the Tipperary score coming from Caitlin Kennedy leaving the final score Cork 4-12 Tipperary 3-7.

Munster Under 14A Ladies Football Championship Semi Final

Tipperary 1-5 Cork 3-3

 

Tipperary Ladies Under 14 team had home advantage in Bansha playing Cork Ladies in the Munster LGFA Under 14 A semi-final on Saturday last. The stakes were high for both teams, as the winner would progress to the U14 A Munster final against Kerry and the losing team would be bowing out of the competition.

 

Cork stormed out of blocks from the throw in and only for a great save by Tipperary goalkeeper, Megan Tynan in the opening minutes, Cork would have converted their first scoring opportunity. However, it was Tipperary that were first on the scoreboard with a free from Emer McCarthy after three minutes, with Cork's Zoe O'Herlihy balancing the books a few minutes later, with a pointed free also.  Both teams played defensively in the first quarter, which meant scores were very difficult to come by. A great run through the Cork defence by Tipperary midfielder Niamh Hayes and good link up play with the Tipperary half forward line, almost resulted in Tipperary's score but it went marginally wide by Emer McCarthy. However, a minute later Emer composed herself and stepped up and slotted over a second free for Tipperary. 

 

The first of Cork's goals came on the sixteenth minute mark by Gráinne Ui Murchú and consistent pressure by the Cork midfielder's and half forward line resulted in their second goal on the twenty fifth minute by Eabha O'Neill. Cork's second goal seemed to ignite the Tipperary girls into action and resulted in Tipperary having two goal chances but tenacious defending by the Cork full back line, meant these opportunities were not converted but instead resulted in well taken points by Rachel Moore on twenty six minutes and Niamh Hayes on twenty eight minutes. However, Cork appeared to intensify the pressure and were running at pace at the Tipperary defence, which resulted in a penalty for Cork on the thirtieth minute, which was initially well saved by Tipperary goalkeeper Megan Tynan but on the rebound, a foul appeared to have been committed in the small square for which Tipperary's Cathy Hogan received a yellow card and seen Cork being awarded a second penalty within a few minutes. Cork's full forward, Laoise Collins made no mistake for their second penalty opportunity and slotted the ball into the Tipperary net. The final score in the first half came from Tipperary's Emer McCarthy who converted her third free. Half time score Cork 3-1 Tipperary 1-4.

 

Tipperary made three changes at half time and played without wing back Cathy Hogan until she resumed play from been sin binned in the first half, which meant Tipperary were under huge pressure in stablising the defence and midfield areas. Tipperary tried incredibly hard throughout the second half to work the ball up the field to scorable positions, with Rachel Moore and Cathy Hogan making some sterling runs and working hard but the scores just wouldn't come, with Tipperary only scoring once in the second half with a point from Ellie Peters near the end of the game. The Tipperary backs were under constant pressure in the second half, with Sarah English and Ellen Gantley working trojanly to keep the Cork forwards having to shoot under pressure. Cork clocked up a further two points in the second half and were awarded a third penalty opportunity on the thirty fourth minute. Again, Tipperary's goalkeeper who was superb throughout the game, pulled off another fantastic save. Final score Cork 3-3 Tipperary 1-5

 

The Tipperary girls will be extremely disappointed at exiting the Munster Championship at this stage and know that they perhaps did not play at a high enough level of intensity and to their full potential in this Munster Semi Final. Cork seemed to have been that bit hungrier and determined on the day. Ed Burke and his management team however, can take some comfort that there is a high calibre of players at this age group and the experience of competing in A grade competition, will stand to them in the future.

Feile Peil Competition

In the Feile A Competition the following clubs competed to represent Tipperary; Ardfinnan, Brian Borus, Boherlahan, Clerihan, Clonmel Commercials, Fethard (A), Galtee Rovers, Holycross Ballycahill, Moycarkey Borris, Moyle Rovers, Moyne Templetuohy, St Patrick's. In the Semi Finals Galtee Rovers overcame Holycross Ballycahill while Fethard (A) defeated Brian Borus. Galtee Rovers were victorious in the Final and will represent Tipperary in the Feile A Competition.
 

Aherlow, Arravale Rovers, Cappawhite, Fethard (B), Lattin Cullen, Silvermines, Sliabhnamban and Thurles Sarsfields all competed to represent Tipperary in the Feile B Competition. Silvermines defeated Lattin Cullen in one Semi Final while in the other Semi Final Sliabhnamban overcame Thurles Sarsfields. Sliabhnamban will now represent Tipperary in the Feile B Competition. The Feile Peil will be held on the weekend of June 23rd in Cavan/Monaghan/Fermanagh.

 

 

County Feile Skills Final 

Tipperary Ladies Football are asking that clubs nominate one player to go forward to the County Feile Skills Final in Tipperary which will be held on Sunday, May 7th at a venue to be confirmed. Nominations can be emailed to [email protected]. The successful candidate will represent Tipperary at All Ireland Finals on June 10th.

 

Post Primary Blitz

Best wishes to all the Post Primary Schools who have entered the Tipperary Ladies Football Blitz on Thursday April 27th. The blitz will be held in Rockwell College at 10am.
