Brian Whelahan has expressed his desire to continue as Offaly hurling manager.

The Millennium Man's second season at the helm ended with last Saturday's heavy All-Ireland qualifier first round defeat by Clare in Ennis. Offaly's Leinster SHC quarter-final loss to Laois meant they failed to win a game in this year's championship, and Whelahan admitted the decision regarding who will be in charge next year is one for the county board to make.

"Of course (I want to stay)," he is quoted in the Irish Examiner.

"I'm an Offaly man. But at the end of the day, that's not for me to decide.

"It's all about Offaly hurling at the end of the day. Taking the next step and putting in place the proper structures and I think this year was the start of it.

"We teamed up with Athlone IT at underage level. That's going to take five or six years for that to be seen on the ground and it's a process. But you deal with the players you have and they give you everything."
