Reunion of 1964 All-Ireland champions

September 05, 2014

A 50th anniversary reunion of Offaly's 1964 All-Ireland minor football champions will take place in the Tullamore Court Hotel next Friday, September 12.

The ground-breaking success heralded a golden era for Offaly football, with many of that team - including Martin Furlong, John Smith, Eugene Mulligan, Willie Byran, Tony McTague and Mick O'Rourke - going on to win All-Ireland senior medals in 1971 and '72.

All-Ireland winning minor captain Sean Grogan told the Midland Tribune: "There was remarkable enthusiasm from the clubs for the event considering that when one of our committee made contact with the chairpersons of seven clubs, he discovered that six of them hadn't been born at the time of that victory.

"In a way, it reveals the spirit of the Faithful County."
