NICKY RACKARD CUP

Tyrone 2-11, Monaghan 0-16

A resurgent Tyrone held out for the narrowest of victories against a battling Monaghan in this entertaining round one game in the Nicky Rackard Cup that, while fairly mundane throughout, still built to an exciting finish in St. Mary's Park, Castleblayney on Saturday.

At the end of a scrappy enough 1st half where chances were at a premium, Monaghan led by 2 points thanks mainly to the accuracy of Donal Meegan, who registered 6 from frees, his final 2 putting Monaghan 0-7 to 0-5 in front.

Monaghan had the better of things in the 3rd quarter at the end of which they led by 4 points but that changed dramatically in the opening minutes of the final quarter as Tyrone registered 2 goals inside 3 minutes, both with something of the gift variety about them, and with 12 minutes left they had opened a 4 points lead. Monaghan fought back to narrow the margin to the minimum twice but Tyrone held out for the narrowest of victories.
