St Vincents 1-12 Kilmainhamwood 0-7

St. Vincent's overcame Kilmainhamwood in this opening round of the JFC Group B game at Rathkenny on a score of 1-12 to 0-7. While St. Vincent's would have been happy with their win, the display in many areas of the field leaves much room for improvement. St.Vincent's play in the opening half was listless and largely disjointed. As a result no doubt of the 'half-time talk', things improved considerably in the second half.

Cathal Tallon, recalled in goals performed creditably throughout, proving steady under the high ball and making a crucial low save 10 minutes into the second half. Kilmainhamwood's early tactic of the long high ball failed to pay dividends as the full-back line of John Corry, Barry O'Sullivan and Kieran Brangan soon got to grips with the situation and shackled the inside forwards. At centre-field the St. Vincent's pairing of Niall Tallon and Martin Fox (and later augmented by the introduction of Ronan Sheridan) battled bravely throughout. With one or two exceptions, the forward line overall was often disappointing and lacked a cutting edge.

Kilmainhamwood opened the scoring in the first minute with a fine point from play. Declan O'Sullivan equalised for the winners with a point on 5 minutes after good work down the left flank by Kieran Brangan. Kilmainhamwood  quickly replied with a point but this was cancelled out by a fine point from Tommy Fields after a move from the back initiated by J. Corry and carried on by Paddy Muldowney who fed Fields. St. Vincent's proceeded to score 4 points before the half ended, from Bob Tallon, D.O'Sullivan, Richie O'Sullivan and Fields(f).

However during this period they also kicked 6 wides, 3 of those coming in the final 3 minutes of the half. With Kilmainhamwood scoring a further 3 points from play this left the score at half-time 0-6 to 0-5 in favour of St. Vincent's. The only other point of note during the half was a St. Vincent's claim for a penalty almost on the stroke of half-time when T. Fields appeared to most observers to have been pulled down in the square but the referee ruled otherwise.

Kilmainhamwood opened the half brightly but wasted three scoreable chances in the opening minutes. St.Vincent's increased their advantage with 3 points (2f) by R.O'Sullivan and a fine point by B. Tallon, after a clever pass from O'Sullivan. An attempted further point by R.O'Sullivan in the 13th minute of the half, hung in the air and dropped down on to the goal line, and with T. Fields distracting the keeper, the ball hopped up into the net. Kilmainhamwood replied with 2 points and these were to be their final scores of the game.  St. Vincent's had the last scores of the game with points by R. O' Sullivan (f) and Tommy Kearns.

St. Vincent's: Cathal Tallon, Ciaran Brangan, Barry O'Sullivan, John Corry,  Tommy Kearns, Ryan Hand, Shane O' Brien, Martin Fox, Niall Tallon, Bob Tallon, Paddy Muldowney, Declan O'Sullivan, Robbie Lynch, Tommy Fields, Richie O'Sullivan

Subs ; Ronan Sheridan for R. Lynch,  Eoin Hand for D.O'Sullivan and Colm Hand for P. Muldowney

Kilmainhamwood Report

Kilmainhamwood 0-7 St. Vincent's 1-12

Kilmainhamwood suffered a first-round championship defeat at the hands of St Vincent's in Rathkenny on Friday the 19th of May.

The first half started off evenly as both sides traded scores while also missing some guilt edge chances. The halftime score saw the Wood a point down and well in contention to win the game.

However it was St Vincents who kicked on in the second half and two early points set some breathing space between the sides. A shot from a St Vincents forward looked as if it would fall into Kilmainhamwood's keeper Padraig Carolan's arms but, it was punched over his head at the last second which proved to be the decisive score in the match.

The game got heated late on as linesmen who had to be provided by the two teams involved in the game made partisan decisions which enraged both sides on what were clearly incorrect side line balls. Both sets of crowds also complained that there was no scoreboard which left it difficult to know who was winning for much of the game. Considering the 10€ cost of entry, championship facilities should provide a certain level of professionalism before getting the honour to host championship football games.

In the end St Vincents ran out comfortable and deserved winners.

Best for Kilmainhamwood were Philip Moran in defence and David Russell in attack.

Kilmainhamwood: Padraig Carolan, Philip Moran, Padraic Barber, Richard Corbally, Harry Corbally, Emmet Clarke, Ronald Owens, Paddy Carolan, Gary Yorke, Alan Carolan, Michael Shankey, Damian Russell, Paul Carolan, Shane Clark, David Russell
