St Vincents Curraha 3-10, Jenkinstown Gaels 6-7

St Vincent's Curraha hosted Jenkinstown Gaels for this 2nd round Minor Championship game played in perfect conditions last Saturday afternoon.

St Vincents Curraha were first on the board courtesy of a Conor Moriarty point following a foul on Sean Keogh.  Jenkinstown Gaels replied immediately with their 1st point of the game. Both sides then swapped goals with James Gibney slotting the ball into the corner of the net for the home team following a well worked move involving Niall Murphy, Ian Battersby and Conor Moriarty.

St Vincents/Curraha then registered their second green flag of the match following a powerful run by midfielder Brian Joyce who found Kevin Laffey. The latter passed to Conor Moriarty who made no mistake in dispatching to the net. Jenkinstown kept in touch with several well taken points.Conor Moriarty added scores from play and frees and at this stage the game was finely balanced. Unfortunately for the home team, Jenkinstown Gaels had a 10 minute purple patch leading up to half time and with a combination of some uncharacteristic defence lapses and some accurate finishing by the Gaels forwards, St Vincents/Curraha conceded 4 goals. Notwithstanding this dreadful setback, the home team continued to contest every ball and fine runs from Ryan Hand, Niall Murphy and Andrew Battersby yielded further points. A brilliant save from the impressive Jenkinstown keeper denied Conor Moriarty a certain goal with the ball heading for the top corner of the net.

Half-time: St Vincents/Curraha 2-7, Jenkinstown Gaels 5-4

The 2nd half started with both sides eager to gain possession and register further scores. Conor Moriarty opening the second half score with a well taken point from the right wing. This was followed by another Moriarty score, this time from a free. Jenkinstown Gaels replied with a point before a high ball into the home defence fell to a Jenkinstown forward who rifled the ball into the roof of the net. St Vincents/Curraha again attacked the Gaels defence and with Conor O'Farrell instigated moves from wing back, they were rewarded with a penalty after James Gibney was fouled in the square. However, the spot kick hit the post and rolled harmlessly wide. From the kickout the ball was won by St Vincents/Curraha but the ensuing shot hit the upright to deny the home team a further score. Patrick McGill added a further point with a well taken score before Conor O'Farrell unleashed a powerful low shot which gave the Jenkinstown keeper no chance. However, it was all too late as the earlier Jenkinstown Gaels goals proved a bridge too far for the home side.
