SHC: Reds rule in 'derby' clash

June 28, 2015

Trim's Alan Douglas

Superior scoring prowess was central to Trim's decisive SHC Group A round two win over local rivals Boardsmill at Kildalkey on Saturday evening.

Trim  3-14
Boardsmill  0-12

Trim's second win of the campaign was achieved with six different players registering from play. All bar four points of the winners' tally came from play.

Midfielder Niall Weir contributed 75% of Boardsmill's tally while Cathal Flattery chipped with a brace of fine points. Sean Dixon's 41st minute point completed the 'Mill tally.

For two thirds of this fixture little separated the sides. Backed by the diagonal wind blowing from the dressing room end Trim outscored Boardsmill by 1-5 to 0-1 following Dixon's score.

Though listed at 13, James Toher operated to great effect as an auxiliary midfielder where his athleticism and skill troubled Boardsmill. He scored 1-5, his goal arriving in first-half stoppage giving Trim a lead, 2-5 to 0-8, they took to the dressing room and retained to the end.

Eamonn Clancy's men outscored Boardsmill 1-9 to 0-4 in a second-half dampened by some light rain. One of Alan Douglas's four points illuminated the second-half. He also provided the assist for Neil Heffernan's 57th minute goal that brought the latter's tally to 1-3.

Two Toher points (one from a long range free following a mazy run by the same player) completed the scoring and leaves last year's runners-up in a good position ahead of their round three meeting with Dunboyne. Boardsmill are set to meet champions Kiltale.

David Troy's men lost to Dunboyne by 10 points in round one, but took the game to their fancied opponents from the off here. They led on four separate occasions in the first 30 minutes.

To their credit they responded well to conceding the game's opening goal to Damien McGee in the 10th minute that left it 1-1 to 0-3. Seconds later the scores were tied for the second time.

By the 18th minute Boardsmill led by two points, 0-6 to 1-1. After Trim regained parity through Toher (free), the 'Mill were back in front coutesy of Weir's 24th minute free, 0-7 to 1-3.

When points from Douglas and Heffernan restored Trim's lead, Boardsmill tied the scores for the fifth and final time 29 minutes in. Then came Toher's goal - at the end of a move started by full-back Eolan Harrington - and the pendulum had swung the Reds' way.
