JFC: Curraha back on track against K'Wood

April 26, 2015

Hands up during the Meath Junior FC clash with Curraha and Kilmainhamwood at Seneschalstown.

Curraha 1-12
Kilmainhamwood 0-11

Curraha got back on track in the Junior A Championship after a hard fought and well deserved victory over Kilmainhamwood in Seneschalstown.

The return of Meath Senior James McEntee certainly helped Curraha and the centre forward was the reason Curraha were in front at half time as his 1-05 helped his team to a four point half time lead. Although Kilmainhamwood got the first score of the game after a misplaced ball from Gavin Coyle, that was the only time the led in the game as Coyle got Curraha's first score which was replied with a goal from McEntee. This good start was enhanced when McEntee got two further points along with a well taken score from Ciaran O'Hanrahan. Kilmainhamwood did come back into the game towards the end of the first half but another three pints from McEntee ensured Curraha had a comfortable lead at the break.

Curraha came out all guns blazing at the start of the second half and a well worked move from their full back line saw them increase their lead thanks to a fine effort from David Toner.  Kilmainhamwood however, didn't give up and they responded well with two unanswered points to leave just three points between them but a well taken free from Conor Moriarty pushed Curraha in front again and this score was followed by another McEntee point. Some wayward shooting from the wood didn't help their cause and two further points from Moriarty ensured that Curraha would take the two points on offer and get back on track after their first round defeat to Bective.

Best for the winners were McEntee, Moriarty and Sean O'Hanrahan.

O'Hanrahan 0-1. Subs: N. Shortall for Keogh, P. Dowling for Jackson, A. Battersby for Coyle, P. O'Hanrahan for C. O'Hanrahan, N. Moriarty for McManus.

Curraha                                   1-12
Kilmainhamwood headed into this match looking for their first win in this year's Junior A championship, but unfortunately the wait goes on for the 'Wood, as Curraha ran out four point winners, in what was a keenly contested championship match played in perfect conditions in Seneschalstown Saturday evening last, the 26th of April. The 'Wood made a couple of team changes from their first championship match against Wolfe Tones, with the introduction of Paul Carolan and Cathal Bennett into the team, both players making their first ever championship start for the North Meath team.
The 'Wood made the better start and went a point up through midfielder Emmet Clarke, but it did not take Curraha long to get moving, with the aid of county player James McEntee, who was missing for Curraha in their first championship match, hit an unanswered 1-04, with McEntee registering 1-03 of this, before David Russell responded for the 'Wood with his first of the game. The remainder of the first half was point for point for both sides, with Kilmainhamwood kicking a further four points before the break, through two Kiernan frees, a second for Russell and one for Michael Shankey, Curraha went into the break leading 1-07 to 0-06.
Kilmainhamwood went into the second half looking to recover from the early goal which they conceded, but could never really undo the damage which was done, four Stephen Kiernan points, two from frees and one for Alan Carolan kept the 'Wood in the match. In the final ten minutes Kilmainhamwood outplayed the Curraha side but they could not take advantage of this as they registered up to six wides during this period. The 'Wood never stopped fighting in this match, but it just was not to be, as Curraha ran out four point winners on a score line of 1-12 to 0-11.
