JFC: Brigid's summer fails to arrive

On a bright day in Athboy the Junior Championship had a very sunny start for Summerhill who took the lead with a scrambled goal in the 2nd minute after St Brigids failed to deal with a long ball in.
St Brigids settled and replied with a point from play from Oisin Kiernan in the third minute. Summerhill hit back wth a disputed point which many observers thought was wide. Brigids narrowed the gap with two well struck frees by seventeen year old corner forward Joseph Blake.
St Brigids had a lot of wides during this period and Summerhill finished the first half by scoring a point in the 22nd minute. Half time score Summerhill 1 2 St Brigids 0 3.
In the second half Summerhill opened the scoring with a point in the second minute and although St Brigids Oisin Kiernan replied with a point, Summerhill hit the net once more with a crucial goal in the 11th minute which gave them the margin that they needed. Summerhill were leading by five points when Brigids scored two futher points from Joseph Blake and Oisin Kiernan. Summerhill got a point in the last minutes of play. A goal was scored by St Brigids substitute Stephen Skelly in injury time brought the full time score to Summerhill 2 4 St Brigids 1 6. It was a tough physical match where scores were hard to come by and ultimately a more physical Summerhill team prevailed against a youthful St Brigids team who to their credit battled till the end on a day when little went right for them. Best for St Brigids Ryan Tighe and Philip Tuite in defence, Ian Browne in midfield and Joseph Blake in attack.
