HS Meath Football Team of the Week

April 15, 2015

A good few clubs will have a lot of repairs to do after round 1.

Ninety per cent of the first round club championship games are over with just a few clubs have yet to get off the mark.

As usual there were plenty of surprises on the first day but more importantly, for our team, some outstanding performances. We pick our first team of the week for the year from the opening weekend of the club football championships.

1. Shane Breslin (Bective)
Made a crucial save from the penalty spot just before half time and kept a clean sheet as Bective put their poor league form behind them to account for pre-championship favourites Curraha in Slane.

2. Darragh Smyth (Navan O'Mahonys)
Outstanding for the champions. Cleaned up in the full back line, sometimes under immense pressure from the Seneschalstown high ball.

3. Paddy Kerrigan (Cortown)
Came to his teams rescue time and again especially in the second half when Clann Na nGael came looking for goals.

5. Eoin Martin (Drumconrath)
The one name on everyone's lips leaving Sean Newman Park was the young Drums defender. Clonard led by 1-2 to 0-0 after 11 minutes but Martin hit a goal and a point to drag Sean Kane's charges back in to the game.

6. Davy Dalton (Summerhill)
Time and again broke up Rathkenny raids. Was instrumental in setting up numerous attacks for the winners at Pairc Tailteann.

7. Terry Farrelly (Oldcastle)
Just back from Canada the defender adopted a sweeper like role and frustrated Drumbaragh time and again to give a man of the match performance. The win gave Oldcastle their first championship victory since 2013.

8. Padraic Harnan (Moynalvey)
The usual whole hearted display from the county man. As the saying goes 'he busted a gut' to try and get something from the game against a far superior Wolfe Tones team.

9. Shane O'Rourke (Simonstown)
Showing signs of his form of old. He totally dominated the middle sector under immense pressure against a spirited Walterstown in Loman's Park.

11. Bobby O'Brien (Ratoath)
Gave his team the best possible start with a goal in the 2nd minute and proceeded to score another 2-1 as Trim were overpowered in Martry.

12. Donal Lenihan (St Peters Dunboyne)
Produced a masterful display against Duleek-Bellewstown and scored 1-10 in their twelve point win at Ashbourne.

13. Ciaran Kelly (St Colmcilles)
Top scored for the seaside club with 1-5 as last year's intermediate football championship finalists Ballinabrackey were sent packing under lights at Skryne.

14. Paddy O'Rourke (Skryne)
The county keeper gave an exhibition at full forward against St Pats in Duleek. Hit five points and along with Mark Battersby accounted for all of Skryne nine second half points.

15 Richie Barry (Walterstown)
Gave the Simonstown defence plenty to think about over the hour at Lomans Park. Got a crucial goal and a point in the second half as The Blacks fought back for a well deserved draw.
