AFL2: Oldcastle take home points from Rathkenny

March 30, 2015

Rathkenny's Christy Meade

Rathkenny 1-05
Oldcastle 0-10

Oldcastle survived a late Rathkenny rally to take home the points in this A League Division 2 game played in a very blustery Rathkenny last Sunday evening, March 29th.

Rathkenny played against the very strong gale force wind in the opening half and could only produce one score, as Louis Timmons sent over from the touchline on fifteen minutes. Oldcastle opened the scoring on eight minutes before extending the lead on twelve minutes. Five unanswered scores from the 17th minute were probably the winning of this game.

The wind died down as the second half started with two early scores from Caolach Halligan reducing the gap to four points on 38 minutes. However the hosts failed to score again until five minutes from time as Oldcastle knocked over two frees. With the Sun now shining brightly and the wind having disappeared, Caolach Halligan popped over his third of the day before Oldcastle completed their scoring tally on 57 minutes. Rathkenny were down by six when Christy Meade rounded off a great passing move to bury to the net with 58 minutes on the clock. When Brian Meade sent over a long range point there was a minute plus stoppage time remaining. However the hosts could not get any further scores and so lose their first game of the campaign.

Oldcastle win in Rathkenny.

Oldcastle 0-10, Rathkenny 1-5
With the wind being a determining factor in this game, Oldcastle took full advantage of it and left Rathkenny unable to counteract the scoring done during the first half. Alan McCann opened the scoring for Oldcastle in the opening quarter. Conor McHugh then set the tone as he put over his first of seven frees in this game. Rathkenny answered back with a point of their own but this was to be their only score of this half having to contend with the strong breeze. The next three scores were converted frees from McHugh before McCann added another following good play from all in the half forward line. McHugh added one more in the closing stages of this half to leave six between the sides.
Rathkenny got off to the better start in the second half converting a free and one from play to reduce the deficit. With Cian McPartland taking charge, the Oldcastle defence got on top for the next ten minutes aiding in two more scores from McHugh. Rathkenny were working to lessen the difference, they added one more to their tally. McPartland followed with one of his own, to keep the lead after a good run up the field. The concluding minutes were when the Oldcastle defence were under most pressure following a Rathkenny Goal and point. This was as close as the sides would get as Oldcastle did their best to hold off their rivals in injury time.
It was an overall good performance from the Oldcastle Team in Rathkenny.
