Corn na Boinne: Castletown win in Drumbaragh

February 23, 2015

Castletown's Robert Hoey

Drumbaragh 1-10
Castletown 2-10

This was a game of two halves as Castletown registered their first win of the season at a blustery Drumbaragh.

Castletown elected to play with the aid of the strong wind in the first half and set about the dismantling of the home team. All over the park Castletown played like a team with a point to prove after their drubbing at the hands of Ratoath the previous week. It was a first start between the sticks for the returning Johnny Ginnitty after his spell down under.

Robert Hoey lined out at full forward and he would go on to cause all sorts of havoc in the Drumbaragh goalmouth. Castletown would notch up a fine total of 2-8 in the first half, thanks in no small measure to a dominant midfield. Damian Ginnitty and Gerrard Farrelly took control and provided a platform for the forwards to open up on their opponents. The scores were evenly distributed among the Castletown forwards and midfield, with everyone getting in on the act. Robert Hoey was instrumental in both goals. He was on the end of a Murt Donnolly 45 to send the ball to the net with the help of some poor defending. The second, a penalty from Kevin Ross, was as a result of a foot-block on a Hoey shot by the Drums keeper. At the other end the home team had to make do with a couple of break away points. Half time score 0-2 to 2-8.

The wheels came off the Castletown juggernaut in the second half. It would be easy to blame the poor conditions but in truth Drumbaragh showed the urgency and the willingness to make a fight of it that Castletown couldn't match. They would go on to score 1-8 in a second half performance that in truth deserved more than a defeat. It took Castletown almost 20 minutes to register a score in that half, a nice point from Hoey. A point from Kevin Ross late on was enough to put 3 points in it which meant that Drumbaragh needed another goal to bring the game into extra time. With the ref allowing 4 minutes of added time it was backs against the wall stuff however Castletown held out to book a place in the competitions quarter finals.
