Fergus Smith took charge of this years SHC final between Kiltale and Trim.

After 14 years officiating at the highest level in hurling, top Meath whistler Fergus Smith has decided to call it a day.

"I have got great satisfaction from the time involved," he told hoganstand.com. "Nobody ever dreams, when refereeing at U13/U14 games, that you would end up officiating in Croke Park.

"I have reffed two All-Ireland minor finals and ran the line for Cork versus Galway senior final in 2005."

Smith's curriculum vitae also includes a Lory Meagher final, a NHL final and all provincial finals in Leinster.

"I was lucky that I had a great group of umpires down through the years It's been a team effort and only for them I wouldn't have got to where I got."

The Blackhall Gaels clubman intends to continue officiating at club level in the Royal County for at least another year.

"I appeal to all clubs to put forward people to take up the whistle as the situation in meath is getting serious."
