Ladies JFC B: Moylagh defeat Boardsmill to take title

September 08, 2014

Moylagh's Aisling Gibney with Toni Hannon (Boardsmill) during the Meath ladies JFC B decider at Lomans Park Trim.

Moylagh claimed the Meath Ladies Junior B football championship title with a win over Boardsmill. The game was an excellent exhibition of football on a fine and humid Sunday afternoon in Trim GAA's excellent facilities.

Moylagh 4-8
Boardsmill 2-8

Moylagh started as slight favourites given their experience at this level but Boardsmills young team made them fight hard for their victory.

Moylagh's Marie Masterson opened the scoring  with a well taken point in the first minute before Sinead McLoughlin replied for Boardsmill with a dipping shot to the net after. Donna Barkey raised a green flag for the North Meath Girls some minutes later. Donna Garry followed up with a point. At this stage both teams were fiercely contesting every ball with Moylaghs mobility in the middle of the field beginning to cause Boardsmill trouble. Paula Dorian knocked over 2 quick points, the second from a free before Sinead McLoughlin followed with a score of her own. Boardsmill led by a point at this stage even though the electronic scored board placed them 2 ahead. That generosity was corrected at half time. Maura Hegarty made a vital block to prevent a certain goal with 20 minutes gone. That was as good as it got for the 'Mill' girls as Moylagh soon withdrew a forward to cover in front of their full back. Niamh McEvoy was deployed in a similar position for Boardsmill but Moylagh  recorded 2-2 in the last 10 minutes. Goals from Garry and Aoife Gibney gave the girls in green a seven point cushion at the break.

Aoife Gibney extended the lead to eight early before the winners were rocked with an Amy Troy goal. Boardsmill trailed by 6 but were beginning to dominate possession. Rachel Troy had replaced Davina Dempsey and Lauren Kelly had come on for Sinead McLoughlin before Dorian knocked over another free to reduce the deficit to 5 points with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. Dani O Sullivan sent over a close range free before Lauren Kelly swivelled and struck a fine point off her left foot to reduce the gap to 3 points on 26 minutes. Alannah Hannon shipped a heavy knock and was replaced by Aoife Flynn. Boardsmill's pressure had gotten them close but a breakaway point from Marie Masterson and a goal from Aoife Gibney ensured there was to be no comeback. Boardsmill continued to fight and raised two more white flags through Kelly and Caoimhe Bird to come up short at the final whistle 2-8 to 4-8.

Boardsmill  were best served by Amy Troy and Sarah Dowling . They were ably assisted by Hannah Tuite, Maire Hegarty , Caoimhe Bird and Paula Dorian. Club mentors and parents were immensely proud of this young team which have an  average age of just 17 years. Surely success for this group  will not be far away.

After the game Meath Ladies Board Chairperson Aisling Clery presented the JFC B Cup to Sophie Garry and the player of the match to Moylagh's Aoife Gibney.
