Ladies IFC: Simonstown climb to senior ranks

Simonstown defeated Summerhill to win the Meath Intermediate Football Championship in Ashbourne. The Navan club completed a couple of remarkable years have won the junior title last year and will be the team to watch in next years senior competition. It also completed a great year for several of their players who were part of the Loreto College All Ireland winning squad back in April.

The opening half was a low scoring affair. Jenny Rispin got the games first score for Summerhill. Regina Hand and Naoise DeGraaff pointed to give Simonstown the lead after 15 minutes. Rachel Gardiner and Crowe traded points. With five minutes remaining the score stood at 0-3 to 0-2. The winners sprung to life with a well take DeGraaff goal and a point from half back Aisling Cassidy to open up a 1-4 to 0-2 lead at the break.

Kelly Harris extended the lead for the Navan girls early in the second half.  Niamh Crowe replied for Summerhill before the winners enjoyed a purple patch. Regina Hand sent over twice while Ailbhe McHugh and Eleanor Lane also pointed to open up a 1-9 to 0-3 lead. Summerhill were far from finished. Niamh Crowe netted a penalty and this was quickly followed by another three pointer courtesy of Ciara Daly to narrow the gap to 1-10 to 2-4. McHugh steadied the winners with a point. The last five minutes was all Simonstown. Points from Lane, Eve Wardick and DeGraaffe along with a Harris goal sealed the issue in Simonstown's favour.

After the game Aisling Clery presented the ladies IFC cup to Simonstown captain Grainne Harrington and the player of the match to Aisling Cassidy.
