Camogie: Kilmessan continue unbeaten run

August 24, 2014

Meath senior camogie championship 5th Round played @ Kilmessan Thurs 21st Aug

Kilmessan 2-18
Trim 1-3

Kilmessan continued their unbeaten run in the senior championship with a comprehensive win over last years finalists Trim.
In what has been an emotional week for the club, the girls showed their unity and fighting spirit producing a gritty performance all over the field. A minute silence was observed respectfully by both teams prior to the match in honour of the late Marty Sheridan whose daughters Noreen and Mary-Ellen are key members of the Kilmessan panel.
The match got off to a tense start with both teams struggling to settle and get a hold of proceedings but Kilmessan were first to register a score from a pointed free. The busiest member of the Trim team in the opening half was keeper Ann Cole who fielded high balls excellently and remained calm under pressure from the Kilmessan attack. kilmessan had points from play in the opening half from Stephanie Horan, Katie Ni Choileain and Aileen Donnelly, the remainder placed balls, Trim only managed a single Christine Fagan
pointed free in the first half such was the dominance of the Kilmessan defence to leave the score 10points to 1 at half time.
The defending champions were certainly not going to let a 9 point advantage slip away in the second half and two goals in quick succession from Nadine Doyle and Ni Choileain in the third quarter killed of the game as a contest. Trim did manage a goal of their own, a fine Rachel Winters aerial bat from the edge of the small square however it was too little to late and while Trim tried to create goal opportunities through short frees in their forward line, Kilmessan defence withstood all pressure and set up their own attack for substitute Sarah Ross who added two excellent points from play in the last ten minutes and indeed was unlucky to have a goal disallowed for a deemed square ball. The final  score finished 2-18 for Kilmessan to Trim's 1-3. Best for Kilmessan were full back Caoimhe O'Leary and the half back line of Maeve O'Leary, Ailbhe Lynch & Tracy King.
With 2 round games remaining, Kilmessan have ensured themselves a semi final spot.
