Div 3 FL: Title for Drumbaragh

August 23, 2014

Drumbaragh's Noel Corcoran is under pressure from Ronan Breslin St Ultans during the Division 3 FL final at Pairc Tailteann.

Drumbaragh claimed the All County League Division 3 title with two points to spare over St Ultans at Pairc Tailteann.

Drumbaragh 0-12
St Ultans 0-10

Last years Junior Championship and Tailteann Cup winners were in control for most of this match. St Ultans, who finished top of Division 3 three points above The Emmets, never really found their stride.

The winners lined out without the influential Darragh McNamara, Enda Nulty and Seanie Bennett.

Drumbaragh were quickest out of the blocks and three early points from Thomas Carry, John Smith and James Connolly gave them a platform for the remainder of the game. St Ultans had to wait till the 15th minute for their first score. Midfielder Conor Smyth firing over and this was followed with another form Gary Gorman. Drumbaragh gained control again with well worked points through Colm Carry, Thomas Carry and corner back John D Smith. With seven minutes remaining the Emmets held a 0-8 to 0-3 lead. Ultans finished the half with a brace of points from Gorman and Smyth and despite playing poorly went in at the break only 3 in arrears 0-8 to 0-5.

The second half continued in the same pattern. John Smith and Cian Rennicks landed two points each in the early exchanges before John Morrissey extended Drumbaragh's lead to 0-11 to 0-7 on the 15th minute. From there on St Ultans enjoyed their best period in the game. They limited the winners to one point, through Col Carry, for the remainder. Scores from Gorman and Rennicks narrowed the lead to two points. Tommy Dowd's charges could have been alot closer had it not been for some very wayward shooting.

Substitute Stepehn Quirke hit a fine score for the Ultans with four minutes of extra time to play but the Ultans could not find a way through a very resolute Drumbaragh defence for a match winning goal.

After the game County Board Vice Chairman Peter O'Halloran presented the Cummins Cup to Drumbaragh captain Peter Carry.
