AFL3: Drumconrath win battle of the Drums

July 16, 2014

Drumconrath's Alan Byrne
Drumconrath 1-16
Drumbaragh 2-12

Drumconrath hoisted themselves off the foot of the Table courtesy of this fine win over last years Junior Championship winners Drumbaragh and St Ultans big win over other relegation contenders Kilmainhamwood.

Drums now still sit in the Relegation zone but with games to come against the other 2 teams in the Relegation mire the situation is now firmly in the North Meath men's hands.

The was a fine game played at near Championship pace and maybe that's the secret to this win as with this win and the win over Meath Hill in the last round Drumconrath have finally brought their Championship form to the League.

Drums started well with Chris Tighe pointing but Drumbaragh soon got into the game and took the lead. It was nip and tuck throughout the 1st half with Jamie Myles in good form pointing twice as Alan Byrne, Brendan Lyons and Graham Tighe also notched points. Drumbaragh played well and had got 8 points on the board but a Goal from Graham Tighe was the difference between the sides as Drumconrath led 1-6 to 0-8 at the break.

Drumconrath had a good 3rd quarter and with 12 minutes to go had opened up a 6 point lead with points from Myles (2), Byrne (3), Stephan Crosby and Eoin Martin as Drumbaragh had pointed twice in that time as Drumconrath looked comfortable leading 1-13 to 0-10.

Drumbaragh raised their game and a couple of lapses of concentration handed Drumbaragh 2 goals, Byrne pointed in between to keep Drumconrath ahead. Man of the Match Myles again put the home side 2 up but Drumbaragh fought back to level the game.

Just on 60 minutes a Drumbaragh played hauled down a Drumconrath attacker and received a Black card and Byrne popped over the resultant free. Drumbaragh had a chance to level the game but the injury time effort sailed wide and Drumconrath held on for another day in their endeavor to stay in Division 3
