HL Div 1: Kildalkey tops in championship dress rehersal

May 15, 2017

Kildalkey's Conor Kearney

Kildalkey 3-12 Kiltale 0-16

Kildalkey visited the home of the county champions on Friday night to take them on in the Division 1 Hurling league on a wet night and slippery conditions for hurling that didn't suit either team.

Kiltale were short a number of regulars due to county commitments while Kildalkey were short a few through injury for this game that was a dress rehearsal to the first round championship game in a few weeks time.

Kiltale were first to score with 2 points from Jack Regan but the men in blue got to grips with the game soon after and a goal from Conor Kearney following his pointed free gave his team the lead which the never relinquished.

Further points followed from play from Kearney (3) and one each from Sean Heavey and Paddy Potterton to leave the 'Village' men 1-10 to 0-7 up at half time.

Kildalkey knew Kiltale were always going to come back at them in the second half but they battled bravely against the rain as well as Kiltale.

Paddy Coneely went on a solo run along the end line which ended up in the net and Kearney got another free to leave it 2-11 to 0-11 but with Kiltale constantly chipping away at their lead they were under pressure to hold them back.

Kiltale reduced their lead to 3 points until a long ball was sent in to the square and Paddy Coneely kept his eye on it to deflect the ball past the Kiltale goalie Ollie Reagan.

Another point from Coneely finished up the Kildalkey scoring while Kiltale kept tagging on points but couldn't peg back the goals in what was an entertaining game of hurling for the conditions.

Kildalkey will be happy with the win and the 2 points on the board but the championship will be a different game and one both sets of players and supporters will look forward to in a few weeks time.
