Mayo joint-manager Pat Holmes is adamant that they have taken a lot out of the league campaign.

The Connacht side are still in the hunt for a semi-final spot as they prepare to face Donegal at home on Sunday.

However, Holmes is looking at the bigger picture and he states in the Western People that the league has afforded them the opportunity to give players plenty of game time.

"We've used the league to try and give fellas game-time and that has worked out well," said Holmes.

"Some of it is by choice, some of it is by necessity. We were down a number of players due to injury, like Diarmuid O'Connor, Cillian, Seamus O'Shea and Paddy Durcan was suspended.

"That obviously gives other fellas opportunities and that's what it is about. There's no point having sixteen or eighteen players, you need a panel capable of performing at this level and that's what we're trying to do."
