Gavin Duffy has been cut from the Mayo football panel without having played a second of competitive action.

The former Connacht and Ireland rugby star, who plays his club football with Salthill/Knocknacarra in Galway, was released from the squad along with a handful of other panellists following a challenge match against Clare last week, the Irish Times is reporting.

The closest he came to playing a competitive match since joining the Mayo fold last summer was when he was named to start in midfield alongside Barry Moran against IT Sligo in the FBD Connacht League in his home town of Ballina last month.

However, he was withdrawn at the last minute due to an issue over his eligibility. Now joint-managers Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly have decided to release Duffy - who played in the 1999 All-Ireland minor final - in what must surely be one of the biggest GAA anti-climaxes of recent times.
