"We're not playing great but we're still winning"

Mayo manager James Horan was proud of his players' efforts in holding off Cork today to book their All-Ireland SFC semi-final ticket.

"It was tighter than it probably should have been," he admitted when speaking to RTE's 'The Sunday Game' following their slender one-point victory.

"We got ourselves into a great position, went five or six points up. Maybe we pulled up the handbrake a little bit and tried to to drop off a little bit rather than pushing up.

"When you do that very quickly momentum can change and that's what we saw. Cork came down and Donnacha O'Connor struck for a goal as he can and that put us in a tight spot but I thought one or two of the scores that we got at the end, we switched from side to side, waited for the right shot and I thought that was great.

"While we did maybe put ourselves in bother we came strong to get through it.

"I'm delighted to get through that game. Cork were defensive, they're hard to play against, it takes a while to break them down but we kept at it.

"A lot of guys put in huge effort today and ran themselves empty which is all you can ask for. We're not playing great but we're still winning and I'll take that all day."
