FL2 round-up: Fechins are champions as playoff places decided

St Fechins are Division 2 champions

The final round of games in the Division 2 League on Sunday morning saw St Fechins confirmed as champions to secure promotion to the top flight for 2015.

The play-off semi-finals will see St Josephs take on Young Irelands, while St Marys will play Roche Emmets. The team to emerge from this quartet will face Cooley Kickhams for the right to play in Division 1 next year.

However, the picture at the other end of the table is not so clear-cut in terms of deciding who will face Westerns for a place in the Division 2 League next season.

St Mochtas, Hunterstown Rovers and St Brides all finished level on eight points and in normal circumstances, St Mochtas would be deemed to have finished second from bottom as a result of their inferior score difference.

However, it has been suggested to the clubs involved that because there was a walk-over in the Clans v St Josephs game in the last round, score difference does not come into play.
The clubs affected are arguing that the outcome of that match did not have any bearing on the three teams, and the matter has yet to be clarified.

On the field of play, the Fechins made up for the disappointment of losing the Intermediate Final by completing a successful season with a 3-15 to 2-10 win over St Brides.

The Termonfeckin side led by 0-10 to 0-3 at the break and extended the gap to 2-13 to 0-5 thanks to goals from Donal Ryan and Robert Flynn. Paddy Reilly and Ray Kelly responded to reduce the gap to 2-13 to 2-10 but a second goal from Flynn secured victory for the Fechins.

The Joes were already assured second spot before they recorded a 1-9 to 1-4 win over a Plunketts side who were assured of survival.

In what proved to be a disappointing game, the Joes led by 0-6 to 0-1 at half time. The Drogheda side lost two players to red cards early in the second half but managed to hit back to within a point thanks to a Trevor Walsh goal.

However, Conall Smyth had the final say as his goal secured the Joes win.

Hunterstown scored a final day victory over St Marys for the second successive year as they scored a 2-11 to 0-12 win in their battle to avoid the relegation play-off.

The Ardee men began well and opened up a three point lead only for Rovers to hit back and with the held of a Brendan Lennon goal went in at the break ahead by 1-4 to 0-6.

Patrick Mooney added a second goal early in the second half to put his side in command and they held out for a five point win.

Young Irelands cliched a meeting with the Joes in the play-offs thanks to a 4-9 to 1-8 win over Glyde Rangers on Sunday morning.

Despite having been already relegated, Glyde turned in a good first half display and a goal from Cillian Farrell on his senior debut helped the Tallanstown men lead by 1-8 to 1-6 at the break.

Dermot Mone got the Young Irelands goal in the first half but his side raised their game after the break and added goals from Jordan O'Donoghue, Dean Maguire and Mone again to seal a comfortable win.

Roche Emmets clinched third place in Division 2 and a place in the play-offs thanks to a comfortable win at home to Na Piarsaigh, which sets up a meeting with St Marys in the play-offs.

Both teams went into the clash with the chance to make the top five but the hosts always looked in charge against a depleted Dundalk outfit.

The home side did the damage in the first half with goals from Niall McArdle and Kevin Callaghan as they held a 2-5 to 0-3 advantage at the interval, before going on to complete the win in a low-scoring second half.

St Mochtas will end up in a relegation play-off of some format after losing by 6-15 to 3-12 at home to Clan na Gael.

The Dundalk men raced into a nine point lead with goals from Paul Martin (2) and Conall McKeever, only for Mochtas to hit back through Conor Lynch and Eamon O'Neill (2) to trail by just 3-6 to 3-5 at the break.

However, the Clans pulled away in the final quarter as Martin completed his hat-trick while Mark Newell and Stephen Coleman also hit the net.
