The Laois GAA Board has come under fire for their handling of Seamus Plunkett's departure as senior hurling manager.

Plunkett surprised the hurling community in Laois and indeed further afield by announcing that he was stepping down from the position.

Earlier this year, Plunkett had stepped down for a week but was reinstated very quickly and it was expected that he would be there for a few years yet.

The Leinster Express reports that 'Cheddar' had put his plans for the future of Laois hurling to the County Board, but not all those plans were supported by the executive.

And former Laois selector Paul Cuddy who worked with Cheddar believes that the county hurlers have lost a good man.

"Brian Cody is with Kilkenny for what, nearly 19 years, what was wrong with Cheddar staying on for another couple of years," said Cuddy.

"The County Board should have done everything in their power to make sure that man stayed on. Maybe he needed to change around his management team a small bit or freshen it up, but to let a man that loves Laois hurling so much go, I think it is a disaster altogether, I don't know the ins and outs of it, but we can't be affording to lose lads like that."
