Martha plays through the pain barrier

Mayo's Martha Carter

A member of the Mayo team that won Sunday's Connacht ladies senior football championship final played for 50 minutes with a broken hand.

Full back Martha Carter suffered the injury ten minutes into the game against five-in-a-row-chasing Galway at Castlebar but kept going and helped her side to a brilliant 3-20 to 0-14 victory.

A proud Mayo manager Frank Browne pointed to the immense character displayed by his No.3:

"People talk about character - character always wins. Martha Carter broke her hand after ten minutes but ... real character. No way was she giving up. She was standing and fighting no matter what. When you have that character you always have a fighting chance."
