Lar Corbett leaves Noel Hickey in his wake on the way to scoring the first of his three goals in the 2010 All-Ireland SHC final at Croke Park - INPHO
The GAA world is in shock following Lar Corbett's intercounty retirement.

The Tipperary County Board announced last night that the 30-year-old had withdrawn from the Premier County panel and the game of hurling is this morning stunned by the news.

Clare boss Davy Fitzgerald hopes the 2010 Hurler of the Year will have a re-think: "Lar has been a thorn in my side for many years, particularly since I've been a manager," he comments in The Star.

"But I don't think it's his tine to retire yet - he's still in his prime. It would be a blow to Tipp if he retires and it's a blow to hurling too because the game needs his flair.

"I'm sure he has his reasons for going, but I'd hope he'll change his mind in a few months' time."

Meanwhile, in the Examiner, another Clare man Tony Considine says: "I'm in complete shock. This came straight out of the blue and I think he's going to be a massive loss to Tipperary.

"You look at his record in scoring three goals in an All-Ireland final and four goals in a Munster final which shows he's a serious forward.

"And he'll also be a massive loss to hurling in general as the game can't afford not to have stars like him. I thought Lar definitely had another couple of years left in him at the top. But obviously he has other commitments that have to take priority."
