Christmas celebrations for Byrne & Clarke in Chicago
Irish Juniors came home from the 57th Annual USHA Junior 4 wall championships from Lattof YMCA in Des Plaines Chicago with 2 titles. Maggie Byrne from the Kiltimagh Club in Mayo claimed the Girls U-15 singles round robin event. In the Boys U-17 doubles Pol Clarke & Tyler Stoffel had a brilliant win over Jordan Taylor & Anthony Callado from Vancouver by 12-21, 21-16, 11-7. Taylor & Collado edged out Mayo's Shane Walsh & T.J. Byrne by just 1 ace in their semi-final contest. Tyrone's Conor McElduff lost out in the final of the Boys 19 & Under singles to Brant Bidegain 21-15, 21-11, having denied Loren Collado by 21-18, 21-6 in the semis.
Coughlin retains Munster Open
The Munster 40 x 20 open under 15 handball tournament was hosted by the Liscarroll, club in Co. Cork with in excess of over 50 players taking part with the final played on New Year's Eve. Fergal Coughlan from the Clooney Club in Clare retained the title that he won last year. Coughlan clashed with Mayo's Niall Joyce in the final. It was the Mayo teenager that got the better start taking game one by 15-10. Coughlin hit form with some blistering play dominating the second and powered his way to a comfortable tie break win. Coughlin became only the second player to retain the title after Cathal Hannon also achieved the double in 2003/2004.
Robbie McCarthy retains John Gaffney Cup
Westmeath's Robbie McCarthy began the new year on a winning note when retaining the 2013 John Gaffney Memorial Cup with a final win over Cavan's Michael Finnegan. The reigning champion was pushed all the way in an action packed final before securing the win over the man from Breffni.

Shanks win Houston Pro Stop
Armagh's Charly Shanks became only the 4th Irish player to win the pro stop when he played some inspirational handball to defeat Naty Alvarado by 15-11, 15-13, 20-18. Shanks was forced to serve game ball four times before securing the win. Shanks follows Paul Brady, Tony Healy & Robbie McCarthy as the only Irish players to have won a Pro stop since Brady's historic breakthrough in 2004.
Brady Ulster Champion
In the provincial championships World Champion Paul Brady kept up a unbelievable record as not having lost a competitive game since 2004. The Mullaghoran man had too much in the tank for doubles partner Michael Finnegan taking Ulster by 21-14, 21-12. Same could be said for Antrim's Aisling Reilly World Ladies singles champion cantered to an emphatic 21-6, 21-9 over Down's Lorraine Havern
Over in Connacht Galway's young gun Martin Mulkerrins secured his first Connacht title at senior level with a powerful performance over Mayo's Stephen Cooney in the final winning by 21-20, 21-3. Roscommon's Leona Doolin defeated Amy Corrigan in the ladies final.
In Munster Clare's Diarmuid Nash World 23 & Under champion played inspirational handball on the way to becoming Munster champion. Nash had an excellent 21-13, 15-21, 21-16 over Cork's Killian Carroll in the semi final and followed this up with an even more forceful victory over Kerry's Dominic Lynch.
Kilkenny's Peter Funchion emerged as the Leinster champion defeating Wicklow's Johnny Willoughby. Kildare's Anna Spence gained victory over Wicklow's Patricia Doyle in the ladies final.
Coughlin's star in Salthill tournament
Salthill Handball Club hosted a very successful 40 x 20 tournament with over fifty players taking part in Junior "B" singles, Junior singles and Masters doubles. Five courts were used over the two day event. Players from Meath, Limerick, Tipperary, Clare, Roscommon, Mayo, Westmeath and the Aran Islands took part. The Junior B grade proved very competitive with the match between Ryan Seoige & Aodan Concannon both from the Inis Mor Islands going head to head. In a tremendous tussle Seoige won out just by 31-29. Meath Tom O' Connor took the Junior B cup while Mayo's Ciaran Burke triumphed over Roscommon's Dennis Creaton by 21-15, 21-1 in the Junior Cup competition. Father & Son combination Fergal Coughlin Senior & Junior stole the show in Salthill in the Masters final defeating Mayo's Joe Dowling & James Towey. The victory by the Coughlin's was widely appreciated by the Salthill faithful.

Catriona Casey UL & Martin Mulkerrins UCD became Irish Collegiate champions for 2013 in the Open Divisions. Casey was in unstoppable form as she cruised to the final. In the Women's Open the UL student defeated Lorraine Havern UUJ by 21-7, 21-8 to repeat her success over Havern in last year's Ladies 23 & Under World singles final. Mulkerrins defeated Fergal Collins Tralee I.T. by 21-13, 21-18 in the Men's open final.

Carrickmore Gael Linn winners
The 23rd Annual Gael Linn Competition was held in Kingscourt. Tyrone's dominated with Carrickmore's Corman Munroe & Ciara Mullen defeating Loughmacrory's Antoin Fox & Caitlin Conway 31-15 in the final. In the Plate section, Catriona Millane & David O Byrne of Model School Limerick overcame Micheal Breathnach's pairing John Ó Biadha & Roisín Ní Ghionnúinon a 38-20 scoreline.
Gardai handle defense forces in handball
The Gardai defeated the Defence forces in the annual handball challenge played in St. Coman's Roscommon. The Defense forces took the lead thanks to Pte Kirk Greene & Pte Colm Jordan. Pte Hurley & Armn Byrne, Michael O'Ronan & Gerry Cloghan extended their lead. The Gardai unveiled veterans Campbell Brennan & Frank Mackin and it had the desired effect. In the last doubles the Gardai duo of Dessie Dowd & Conor McDonnell robbed the trophy back into Gardai hands with victory over Pte Chris Samuels and SS Ciaran Gallen.
Kingscourt hosted the All-Ireland 40 x 20 colleges finals. Martina McMahon Colaiste na Trociare Rathkeale defeated Maeve McElduff Loreto Convent Omagh by 15-9, 5-11. Rising Clare star Colin Crehan Ard Scoil Ris Limerick overcame Galen Riordan St. Peters Wexford in an exciting Senior Boys final that went to a tie breaker. The final score was 15-6, 14-15, 15-12. In February came the shock resignation of GAA Handball C.E.O. Chris Curran. After just four years in the post the Tyrone man helped to transform the game to one of the top sports in the country.

Mulkerrins retains U.S. Collegiates as Casey slams in Ladies
The 61st USHA Collegiate Championships took place in Tempe Florida from February 20-24 last. Martin Mulkerrins UCD defeated Daniel Cordova in the Men's Open final by 21-13, 21-16. In the doubles final Mulkerrins & Sean Foley were just edged out by Isaac Acosta & C.J. Laffey in the tie breaker by 21-13, 10-21, 11-10. In the Ladies Catriona Casey UL had a comprehensive victory over Aoife McCarthy AIT by 21-1, 21-14. Casey and Lisa Loughnane defeated Samantha Zendar & Amalia DeSardi by 21-4, 21-7 in the ladies doubles final. John Hurley & Kevin Mulligan UL were defeated by Ryan Campbell & John Larson USU in the Men's B doubles final by 21-5, 21-12. Other Irish representatives included Terry McElvaney DCU, Colin O' Luing UL, Stephen Cooney, Peter Cassidy Sligo, Seamus Casserly UL. Ciaran Buckley, PJ O' Brien Cork, Sean Killeen, Ronan Quillan TCD, Ciara & Clodagh McMenamon NUIG, Lara Mannion UCD.
Carlow's Sean Ryan, from the Garryhill club was the recipient of GAA Presidents Handball Award. The Carlow man has given 40 years to handball as a player, coach, referee, administration and fundraising for Garryhill.
Brady's brilliance bags nine in a row. Casey win Ladies title
The GAA Handball O' Neills sponsored Irish Open 40 x 20 championships began on Saturday 9th February. Twenty eight players entered the singles and 15 doubles pairings all aiming to win the coveted All-Ireland senior titles. In the quarter finals Antrim's Ricky McCann was within a whisker of going out of the championships with Cavan's Michael Finnegan. The Cavan man led 21-17 and 20-12 in the second. Despite serving for the match on 4 occasions Finnegan could not get over the line. It was McCann who came back from the brink to take the second game by 21-20. Finnegan retired with a leg injury in the tie breaker with McCann leading by 19-9. Reigning Champion Paul Brady proved too strong for Owen McKenna. Robbie McCarthy had a tremendous tussle with Meath's Brian Carroll before booking his place in last four. McCarthy won the contest by 21-15, 18-21, 21-11. Kerry's Dominic Lynch defeated Clare's Diarmuid Nash in the other quarter final. In the ladies quarter final Kerry Maria Daly came through in the tie breaker by 12-21, 21-17, 21-19 over Down's Lorraine Havern. Cork's Catriona Casey caused a huge shock when defeating world champion Aisling Reily in 3 games by 11-21, 21-11, 21-19. The Men's open semi-finals were played in Abbeylara and resulted in wins for Paul Brady & Robbie McCarthy. Brady the defending champion had an 21-10, 21-4 win over Antrim's Ricky McCann while McCarthy was equally impressive with an 21-9, 21-10 triumph over Kerry's Dominic Lynch thus setting up a repeat of last years final. In the Ladies semi's Maria Daly had a comfortable 21-8, 21-9 win over Kildare's Anna Spence while Catrionia Casey defeated Ashley Prendiville in the other semi-final. In the Ladies final Cork's Catronia Casey continued her exceptional winning streak when beating Maria Daly the Ladies singles champion in 2004/05, 2010,11. It was an exciting final with Casey not over awed by Daly. Casey proved the victor on the day by 21-10, 21-15 to claim her first 40 x 20 Senior singles crown.
At the National Congress held in Monaghan Clare's Willie Roche defeated Tyrone's Eugene Maguire 57-40 for President Elect and will take up the role at next year's Annual Congress. It was Chris Curran's last Annual Report to Congress.
In the men's open doubles there was a double header down in O'Loughlin's court in Kilkenny. Cork's Killian Carroll & Brendan Fleming overcame Meath's Brian Carroll & Carl Browne narrowly in 3 games while Cavan's Paul Brady & Michael Finnegan had things much to their own way when disposing of Mayo's Dessie Keegan & Joe McCann by 21-4, 21-4.
Brady & Finnegan 9th doubles title
Cavan's Paul Brady & Michael Finnegan captured their 9th All-Ireland senior 40 x 20 doubles with an 21-8, 21-17 win over Cork's Killian Carroll & Brendan Fleming. Cavan took the first game easily but were made fight all the way in the second before securing the title. Clare's Colin Crehan & Barry Nash were taken to a tie breaker before claiming the Minor doubles title at Meath's (Evan & Dylan Sheridan) expense by 18-21, 21-5, 21-1. In the ladies doubles final Kerry's Maria Daly & Ashley Prendiville champions in 2010 came back to bring the title back to Kerry with a tie break win over Cork's Catriona Casey & Aisling O'Keeffe by 21-11, 11-21, 21-17.

Shanks storms to pro stop win in Salt Lake City
Armagh's Charly Shanks won the Pro Stop in Salt Lake City with a devastating display. In his semi-final match Shanks routed top U.S. players Sean Lenning by 25-3 in just 17 minutes. Ireland's other representative Galway's Martin Mulkerrins hammered Chip Morales 25-8 to qualify. Mulkerrins then defeated Emmett Peixato 25-23. In the quater final Sean Lenning defeated Mulkerrins 25-6. The other semi-final seen Luis Moreno defeat Dave Fink. In the final Shanks proved too strong for Moreno winning comfortably 25-7 over the World's Men's open singles runner-up.
Nash & Reilly take Nationals honours
Clare's Diarmuid Nash & Antrrim's Aisling Reilly were the big winners in this year's GAA Handball Nationals finals played in Ulster venues. The major shock seen tournament favourite Robbie McCarthy knocked out in the quarter finals by Galway's Martin Mulkerrins. Mulkerrins was beaten by Meath's Brian Carroll in the semi's in an energy sapping encounter with the Meath man winning out 21-20, 20-21, 11-9. In the other semi final Diarmuid Nash defeated Cavan's Mick Finnegan 21-16, 21-19. In the Men's final Carroll took the opening game by 21-15. Nash hit back in the second winning by 21-11 and in the tie breaker Nash had that little bit more in reserves of energy after a tiring weekend taking the tie breaker 11-3 and the Men's open title back to Clare.
In the Ladies final Antrim's Aisling Reilly got back on winning ways with an emphatic 21-7, 21-5 winover Cork's Catriona Casey

Brady's wins Seattle Pro Stop
Cavan's Paul Brady underlined his status as the World's greatest ever handball player when taking he WPH Race 4 Eight Pro Stop in the Washington Athletic Club Seattle over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Brady was taken to a tie breaker in the semi-final by Luis Moreno. Brady came through that challenge with a 15-9, 12-15, 11-5 victory. Armagh's Charlie Shanks defeated Dave Fink 15-13, 15-4 in his semi-final. In the final Brady unleashed his power and took the opening game in the final after a whirlwind opening when he led 8-0 at the start. In game two the World champion was 10-5 but Shanks kept Brady scoreless on 4 successive occasions with the Cavan man serving. Both players tired after playing 4 competitive matches in 32 hours.However the Armagh man could not make inroads with Brady's lead and the World's no.1 dominated again for the remainder eventually taking the Pro Stop 15-7 in game two.
Carroll is Boston open Champion
The same weekend as Brady became the Race 4 eight champion Cork's Killian Carroll triumphed in the Boston Open. The young Cork star defeated Jurell Bastidas and Mike Schneider on the way to the final. In the final itself Carroll at just 19 defeated Billy O' Donnell 21-5, 21-5.
Hardball title for Kildare's Niall O'Connor
Kildare's Niall O'Connor claimed his maiden senior hardball crown when capturing the G.A.A. O'Neills All-Ireland singles final in Talbot's Inch. O'Connor defeated Limerick's C.J. Fitzpatrick in a hard fought final winning out 21-15, 21-16. In the Minor final Wexford's Galen Riordan defeated Cork's Michael Hedigan in 3 games 19-21, 21-12, 21-2.
Kilkenny won both the Junior & Masters doubles titles. In the Junior decider Ciaran Neary & William Love became champions over Limerick's Eamon Davern & John Keyes 21-14, 21-10 while the legendary Michael Ducksy Walsh & Eddie Burke easily defeated Kildare's Michael Dowling & Neil Morrison 21-6, 21-2 in the Masters doubles final.

Inis Mor Island organised their 3rd Annual "One-Wall on the Rock and a great number of handballers from around the country attended. In the Men's Open final was a repeat off the 2012 decider with Cork's Killian Carroll and Tyrone's Darragh Daly again meeting in the final. Daly played impressively on his way to an 21-10, 21-17 win. In the ladies final Cork's Catrionia Casey defeated Ciana Curran from Galway 16-11.

McCavitt & Curran win out in Williamstown
Galway's Cianna Curran retained her ladies title with an easy 15-2. 15-7 win over Roscommon's Deirdre Donohoe. While in the Men's open also a repeat of twelve months ago. Conal McCavitt retained his title but only just after an exciting comeback against fellow Armagh played James Doyle in a thrilling tie break contest. Doyle took the opening game by 15-13. McCavitt hit back in game two winning it by 15-10. In the tie breaker Doyle looked to have won it when leading 8-6 but McCavitt dug deep at the right time and managed to gain control eventually winning a memorable contest by 11-9.

Kells man Tommy Sheridan & Mullingar's Robbie McCarthy clinched the Michael Black Memorial Cup in Kells over the June Bank Holiday weekend. The cream of Ireland 60 x 30 players arrived in the Meath town. McCarthy &Sheridan went all the way defeating Mayo's Dessie Keegan & Joe McCann 21-8, 21-8. In the junior section Michael Sheridan & Mick Berry defeated Christy McGovern & John Boy Molloy 18-21, 21-11, 21-12.
Three titles for Irish players in Australian 4-Wall Nationals finals
The Australian handball Association organised their 33rd 4-wall National in Melbourne. This year the Championships was boosted by six Irish players who made the long and exhausting trip over. Derry's Robin Cook defeated Japon's Yukata in the Masters grade and very pulled of a double when just going down to Australian Joe Santilli in the A singles final. Tyrone's Ruairi Kelly went all the way in the Men's open singles beating Eddy Scheurga in a hard fought final by 21-11, 21-15. The Mens A doubles final was an all Monaghan affair with Christopher McKenna & Barry McGuirk taking the title at the expense of Colin Donnelly & Thomas Treanor
Sheridan & McCarthy defeat Mayo kingpins in second final
The Danny O Sullivan Memorial Tournament was held and for the second time in as many weeks seen Tom Sheridan & Robbie McCarthy take on Dessie Keegan & Joe McCann. The Mayo men stunned Sheridan & McCarthy in game one overwhelming them 21-7 in the first and astonishingly were 14-6 up in the second. Sheridan & McCarthy came back magnificently storming back to win the second by 21-19. In the tie breaker Keegan & McCann had no more to give as the fitter McCarthy & Sheridan finished strongly winning by 21-4. In the Paul Russell Memorial Cup final J.P. O'Connor & Mike O'Toole defeated Paudi Quish & Eamonn Davern 21-8, 21-16.
McCavitt & Doolin star in Mount Talbot
The Mount Talbot Club held a very successful One Wall tournament with over 200 players participating from all over the country. Mount Talbot is now a ranked one wall event. Armagh's Conal McCavitt won his second one wall tournament in as many weeks with a narrow 11-9 tie break victory over Mayo's Steven Cooney. In the ladies final Down's Lorraine Havern defeated Leona Doolin.

Brady's 8th U.S Title
Des Moines Iowa was the setting for the 2013 U.S. at the end of June. There was a small Irish contingent yet irish players came away with 3 of the 4 open titles on offer together with the Men's 45 plus singles. World champion Paul Brady yet again was the hero when recording his 8th U.S title defeating rising Galway star Martin Mulkerrins in straight games in the final. Mulkerrins had earlier defeated Tyree Bastidas and had a titanic struggle with Armagh's Charly Shanks winning a terrific battle by 21-20, 21-20. Mulkerrins accounted for Clare's Diarmuid Nash in the semi's. Brady had straighforward wins over Danny Armijo 21-6, 21-6 before accounting for up and coming star Nikolai Nahorniak on a 21-4, 21-7 scoreline. In the final Brady had things all his own way with Mulkerrins in the final winning out comfortably by 21-4, 21-4. In the ladies it was also an All-irish final with Aisling Reilly defeating Catriona Casey 20-21, 21-10 11-3 to record her 3rd U.S title. In the ladies doubles final Catriona Casey & Aoife McCarthy defeating Aisling Reilly & Amelia De Sardi 21-12, 21-20. Dublin's Egin Jensen won another U.S. title when dispatching Rob Pearse 21-4, 21-5 in the Masters 45 plus final. Kilkenny's Ciaran Neary was runner up in the Men's A singles final

Herman Mendez from Puerto Rico champion claimed his second Irish one wall title in 3 years when defeating Cork's Killian Carroll in an outstanding Men's final that went to a tie breaker before the Puerto Rican finally winning out. Down's Lorraine Havern defeated Mayo' s Amy Corrigan in the ladies final.

Kilkishen club in Clare celebrate historic Feile double
Kilkishen Handball Club in Co Clare celebrated a rare double as they captured both Division 1 titles at the Féile na nGael competition in Limerick. Sixty three handball Handball teams took part from all over the Country in what was a festival of handball at Juvenile handball at its very best. Limerick hosted the event with a number of venues in Cork also hosted the games. The overall results are as follows

Kells crowned club 60 x 30 champions
Kells are again the Kings in Club handball having defeated Ballaghaderreen in the Open Club final in Kells. Gary McConnell got Kells off to the perfect start with an 21-16, 21-10 win over Stephen Cooney. Kells were too strong for Ballaghaderreen in the doubles with Tom Sheridan & Christy McGovern recording a 21-9, 21-18 doubles win. Brian Carroll didn't have to play the two games against Dessie Keegan with the Meath side to far out in front to be caught. Kells ran out winners 97-65

Kilkenny One-Wall championships - Neary is senior champion
Windgap Handball Club hosted the county one wall competition at the G.A.A grounds in late July. The lovely weather brought out a large crowd from around the county. There were 5 grades with a total of 25 participants. Windgap was represented by In Mens Open Philly Lonergan In Masters A Grade were Eamon and Jimmy Purcell, In Masters B Grade were Michael O Shea, Simon Walsh. Juvenile U17 were Darragh O Shea,. Juvenile U15 were David Doyle, James Culleton and Pat Grace. For some it was the first time to play one wall but all the competitors provided some very entertaining games. Before the finals took place we were entertained with a GU11 exhibition game between Roisin O Keeffe Kilfane and Noelle Dowling Mothel with Roisin O Keeffe winning. All five finals were played with great spirit and displayed some great handball.

McCarthy's treble. Meath pair retain softball doubles
The Martin Donnelly sponsored 60 x 30 championships started in July with the senior doubles (14 teams) entered. Reigning champions in Meath's Brian Carroll & Tom Sheridan easily accounted for the Mayo pairing of Steven Cooney & Ian McLoughlin 21-4, 21-9. There was a huge shock in Cashel with title contenders Wexford's Barry Goff & Colin Keeling beaten by Roscommon's Rikki O'Gara & Damien Martin in 3 games 5-21, 21-18, 21-18. Runners up in 2012 Mayo's Dessie Keegan & Joe McCann received a bye into the next round.
Seventeen players took part in this year's Martin Donnelly open championships. The Preliminary round started on July 27th with round 1 on August 10th. Mayo's Joe McCann beat Wexford's Barry Goff 21-20, 8-21, 21-18 in the round of 16 match while Ger Coonan a semi-finalist last year was beaten by Steven Cooney 20-21, 12-21.
In the singles quarter finals there was wins for Duckysy Walsh, Dessie Keegan, Robbie McCarthy & Eoin Kennedy. Williamstown hosted the Men's singles semi-finals with Robbie McCarthy defeating 16 time champion Duckysy Walsh by 21-9, 21-5. While Eoin Kennedy defeated Dessie Keegan by 21-10, 21-4. In the ladies Senior doubles finals played in Fahy's Cross in Offaly. Cork's Catriona Casey & Aisling O'Keefe caused a shock when defeating defending champions in Mayo's Paul Gallagher & Amy Corrigan by 21-8, 21-14.
Williamstown also hosted the Senior singles final and at the packed Galway venue was treated to absorbing final involving Westmeath's Robbie McCarthy & Dublin's Eoin Kennedy. It was their 5th final meeting in a row. Kennedy improved dramatically after a slow start which seen him going 8-0 down. The former champion with a great fightback had chances to take the opening game but McCarthy swooped to land the opening game by the minimum 21-20. Kennedy tired midway through the second game and the Westmeath took a firm stranglehold winning his third 60 x 30 singles titles on the trot by 21-10 in the second. Tipperary's Fergal Collins & David Hickey defeated Mayo's Stephen Cooney & Ian McLoughlin 21-7,21-20 while Limerick's Paudi Quish retained his minor singles title with a tiebreak win over Wexford's Galen Riordan.
In the Men's Open doubles semi-final Meath's Tom Sheridan & Brian Carroll defeated Westmeath's Robbie McCarthy & John Shaughnessy 21-14, 21-9 while Mayo's Dessie Keegan & Joe McCann overcame Roscommon's Rikki O'Gara & Damien Martin by 21-16, 21-18. The Meath pairing of Tom Sheridan & Brian Carroll had a spectacular win over Mayo's Dessie Keegan & Joe McCann in a 3 match final doubles programme in Broadford. Cork's Michael Hedigan & Daniel Relihan dft Meath's Evan Sheridan & Robert Fox 21-12, 21-14 in the Minor doubles final. Mayo Stephen Cooney made amends in the Intermediate singles having lost the doubles to weeks ago. In the singles final he defeated Tipperary's Fergal Collins 21-6, 21-7
Cork's Catrionia Casey defeated Kerry's Maria Daly in straight games in the Ladies singles final. Casey completed the double in the ladies winning both the Ladies singles & doubles titles.

Irish handballers in World games
The Irish team of Amy Corrigan, Lorraine Havern,Conal McCavitt, Killian Carroll & team manager Darragh Daly flew out to Cali Columbia for the world games on Thursday 27th July last. Other handball nations taking part were USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Columbia, France, UK, Argentina and Ecuador. The tournament format sees players compete in a doubles competition in a league basis, before qualifying for the knockout stages. The games are seen as the initial start to getting handball included in the Olympics games but faced stiff competition from other sports like beach handball, softball,fistball and even Tug-o-war.
The Irish men's team got off to a great start defeating France 15-5, 15-6 in the opening game and followed this up with an nailbiting win over England's Danny Tristao &Luke Thompson by 14-15, 15-6, 11-10. In their third game Mexico beat Carroll & McCavitt by 15-6 & 15-9. Ireland had to beat the U.S team of Timbo Gonzalez the no.1 ranked player and current world champion Tywan Cook to reach the final. It was a tall order but the Irish lads gave a gutsy performance against the U.S. players just losing out by 15-9, 15-13 after a terrific battle.
The ladies team just missed on a final placing as well losing out 15-14, 12-15, 9-11 in the tie breaker to the Columbian ladies team having earlier beaten England's Tessa Mills & Kathleen Biedenhann15-7, 15-6. The team had support from Eamonn Todd & Hugh Moyna from Truagh Handball Club in Monaghan who were on their travels in South America at the time.

Official opening of Fenagh Handball Court
The official opening of Fenagh Handball Alley took place on Sunday, August 4th last. Handball has been played in Fenagh going back to 1912. Peter Heaney Fenagh & Connacht Chairman was the main driving force behind the project. Club chairman Kevin Doonan and incoming handball president Willie Roche performed the official opening. Current world doubles one-wall champions Jarlath Scollan and Alan Wrynne played some games and there was a doubles exhibition between Robbie McCarthy & Martin Mulkerrins v Dessie Keegan & Joe McCann.

The Annual Garda All-Ireland 60x30 Championships were hosted at The Garda Depot, Phoenix Park, Dublin on Wednesday 25th September 2013.There were four categories played, Junior Singles, Senior Singles, Senior Doubles and Master Doubles.
The Junior competition for the Paddy Perry Cup was won by Sean Cunnane who defeated Gerry Clogher in the final.
The Masters doubles seen an exciting final between Tony Hannon/John Landers v Frank Macken/Seamus O'Connor. In a keenly contested and close final it was Macken & O'Connor who came out on top by 31-29.
Paddy Donovan who last won the senior final in 2010 was back again as he defeated last years champion in Bob Byrne
In the senior doubles Byrne got some measure of redemption when he teamed up with Des Dowd. They defeated Paddy Donovan & Gerry Clogher 31-25 in the fina

The 60 x 30 Intervarsities were held in Kilkenny over the weekend of 18th-20th October.The blue ribboned events were dominated by Kilkenny handballers with Ciaran Neary (Banking), Ciara Mahon (Trinity) and WIT retaining their softball crown once again for the sixth successive season.
Open Team
Patrick Funchion, Dan Breen, Ger McGrath (all Kells, Kilkenny) and Jason Cahill (Tipperary) represented WIT and once again retained the Mens Open team event for Waterford Institute of Technology for the sixth season in a row. The final was held in Kilfane in front of a full gallery. In the first singles game Patrick Funchion faced reigning All Ireland minor champion Paudi Quish and despite a strong showing lost out 13-15, 10,15. Next up for WIT was Dan Breen and Jason Cahill in doubles and comfortably won 15-4, 15-4 setting WIT up nicely for the final singles game. Ger McGrath got of to a great start and defeated UL's John Fitzgerald 15-0. The last singles game was not played as WIT had accumulated enough points to secure victory.

Ciaran Neary (Banking) defeated Niall O Connor (AIT) 21-6, 21-6 in the Open Singles final held in Talbots Inch on Sunday afternoon in his home court. Neary the senior handballer proved too strong this time round for O Connor after getting the better of reigning minor champion Paudi Quish (UL) in the semi final . Niall O Connor overcame Naoise Greene (UCD) in the other semi final.

U.S Open of Handball wins for Catronia Casey, Dessie Keegan, Joe McCann & Morgan Darcy
U.S. Open of Handball in Los Caballeros California began on Thursday October 24th last with nine Irish players making the trip. Four Irish players entered in the Men's open Clare's Diarmuid Nash, Cork's Killian Carroll, Galway's Martin Mulkerrins & Mayo's Stephen Cooney. With the absence of reigning champion in Paul Brady it gave many of the Irish a chance to make a name for themselves. In the Men's Open doubles Mayo's Dessie Keegan & Joe Mc Cann the number two seeds. Antrim's Aisling Reilly received a bye into the quarter finals of the ladies open. Cork's Catriona Casey current All-Ireland champion was the number 3 seed while Westmeath's Aoife McCarthy also entered. Roscommon's Oisin Naughton in Men's A and Morgan Darcy
Mayo's Dessie Keegan & Joe McCann won the Open doubles final with a great win over David Chapman & Emmett Peixato by 21-16, 21-18. Cork's Catronia Casey defeated Antrim's Aisling Reilly by 21-17, 21-12. The Men's Open was won by Luis Moreno who defeated Naty Alvarado by 21-6, 21-20. Moreno got a scare Clare's Diarmuid Nash in the quarter finals just edging it 11-5 in the tie breaker. Four Irish players entered in the singles even. In the Veteran 65+ Galway's Morgan Darcy had a great battle with Bruce Hendelman that went all the way. Darcy using all his experience claimed the title with an 20-21, 21-17, 11-5 victory. Roscommon's Oisin Naughton reached the semi-finals of the men's A to be beaten by the eventual winner Joe Leonis from California

McCann's Golden Hands
Mayo's Joe McCann captured the Golden Gloves 40 x 20 Tournament in Belfast. It was his second major success in a week.
In the semi-finals McCann defeated Antrim's Owen McKenna while Dominic Lynch had a major tussle with Cork's Brendan Fleming and just got over the line in a terrific battle by 11-9 in the tie breaker. In the final with was McCann had that little bit extra reserves and he needed it to finally get the better of the battling Kerryman by 21=20, 21-17 in a great final. It was McCann's second major success in as many weeks. The previous week he won the U.S. National Open doubles title with Dessie Keegan in California.

She's Ace Handball Castlebar.
The Sportslann in Castlebar, as well as the surrounding Handball Clubs in Aughagower, Claremorris, Kiltimagh, Newport and Carnacon hosted the She's Ace handball 40 x 20 games on the Saturday 40x20. Overall 120 took part in the weekend's handball. On the Sunday the 1 wall events took place with new stars emerging. The event was all in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland

Ballaghadereen claim another club title
Ballaghaderreen club champions from Connacht claimed another club title when getting the better of Tipperary Club Ballina in the open final. Stephen Cooney set the Mayo club on their way with a win over Fergal Collins 21-8, 21-16. In the doubles Mayo powerhouses Dessie Keegan & Vinny Moran powered their way to a 21-8, 21-8 win over Michael Carroll & David Hickey. Joe McCann made sure the club title was going to be in Ballaghaderreen for another year with a win in the final singles. The Brackey club in Tyrone won a notable double in the Intermediate & Junior. Cork side Mallow won the Junior B title with a win over Carlow's Tinryland.

St. Joseph's handball club in Wexford hosted the 40 x 20 team's Intervarsities. Over 40 players descended to the Wexford venue. University of Limerick took the major honours defeating UL's second team. U.L . reached 3 out of the 5 finals and accounted for half of the total attendance.
Catriona Casey and Martina McMahon University of Limerick captured the Ladies Doubles round robin event. In the final they defeated DCU's Aisling O'Keefe, and Niamh Farrell.

John Quinlivan, on Sunday July 28th last Unexpectedly at the Regional Hospital Dooradoyle. Late of Cork Ireland. Deeply regretted by his sisters Ita and Kay, brother-in-law Gerry, nephews Jamie and Charlie, cousins, relatives and many friends. Funeral on Thursday August 1st after 11am Mass to Mount Saint Oliver Cemetery. John was a valued member of Ballina Handball Club and represented Tipperary in this year's Munster championship at Silver Masters B Doubles in which he was partnered by Brendan Ryan.
Ann Bourke, Hospital Limerick, Survived by son Ken, daughter Helen and families. Wife of the late Tom. Removal at 7pm to St John the Baptist Church, Hospital. Requiem Mass on Sunday 20th October at 11am. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Shaw. Sister of Antrim Handball Chairman Richard Murphy's passed away on 20th October. Her remains were brought to the Good Shepherd Church, Ormeau Road, Belfast. Funeral Mass on Wednesday 23rd October at 10 a.m.
John Donovan: brother of Seamus Donovan of Hospital Handball club and Paddy Donovan of Hospital/Laois Handball. John was also an uncle to Michael Donovan of Hospital/Laois Handball. His remains reposed in O'Learys funeral home in Hospital, Limerick from 5pm to 7pm on Saturday evening, the 2nd November, with funeral mass on Sunday 3rd November at 11am. Tweet
