Hurling QF's in Cork/Lack of games in Limerick

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I read today that pairc ui chaoimh will be getting all ireland quarter finals (even though nobody yet knows the participants- which could include cork and even though other venues may be nearer to participants)
I have also read that cork were supposed to be getting both munster finals but the new park was not ready

Now i understand why they may want to have big games in cork coz they built a new fancy stadium , but in limerick we built a nice new fancy stadium and have got few big matches, now i see that the munster final between cork and clare will be in thurles even though limerick is closer to and inbetween both counties (and from cork there are 2 main routes) , but look cork prefer thurles and what cork want cork get

remember 2014 munster final between cork and limerick even though pairc ui chaoimh was limited to 32000 (prior year final between same two teams had around 45k in gaelic grounds)
but even though the sensible thing to do was play it in thurles - but as per usual cork got what they wanted, When gaelic grounds was limited to same capacity we got no big hurling games

even in 1983 when cork wanted a replay in the park they got it

im a little annoyed -- economically we have had a bad time of it here in limerick and need big games here to give a dig out to local businesses, we getting plenty of them from munster , but not from the gaa , even last years quarter final between clare and galway was put in thurles when limerick was nearer

Good post janesboro. The most annoying thing of all as a Limerick man is they play games in GG that should be played in NCW IE link Wex but games that should be in GG are in cork.... Wat is the point

I think the Munster football final should be played there.
I have been complaining for years about the venues for games - some counties have home and away arrangements with each other, some don't.. The weekend Laois played Longford and Mayo played Sligo (too lazy to Google the rest of the games from that weekend) the winner of each game was the home team. Why should some teams get home advantage over others?
Kildare are in the Leinster final next month. It will be their 3rd game of this Championship campaign and they have yet to play a home game. Compare that to Galway who have played at home to Mayo and will host Roscommon in Connaught final next month. Hardly fair is it?
Anyway I digress but in the main I agree that other venues should get a fair crack at hosting big games. Was at Kerry v Mayo in Limerick in 2014 and it was a great stadium, great buzz around the place and I'm sure it gave the city a nice boost.. more of this Please!

pairc ui chaoimh is a proper modern stadium that the gaelic grounds isnt.
Gaelic grounds doesnt get that many games as there is so many other grounds of similar size and theyre chosen more or preferred more.
Limerick doesnt get more of the bigger games as counties in general just simply prefer other groounds.
Thurles is perfectly in between Cork and Clare and is quite easy for any in both counties to get to.
Not just simply Cork prefer thurles but other counties do as well.

By God if Galway loose to Wexford we Galway people will not want to be going to cork.We will hopefully win the Leinster final and that will prevent that scenario.

This is what happens when there are too many big stadia. There are 4 big stadia in Munster, the nature of the championship means that some will always be underused.

As for the Munster Final this year I think Thurles is the right shout as the Gaelic Grounds are basically in Clare. I've no idea why the Munster Semi-Final between Clare and Limerick wasn't fixed for the GG though.

Apparently a vote was taken at 1300 yesterday to decide venue. Every game this year is in Thurles. That's totally unfair. Limerick is traditionally where Cork play Clare I couldn't believe that Clare had agreed to play Cork in Cork if Pairc Ui Chaoimh was ready..talk about handing away the advantage.

ormondbannerman - as usual you have to disagree
pairc ui chaoimh is a proper modern stadium that the gaelic grounds isnt.
-gaelic grounds was rebuilt in 2003 - so yes it is a proper modern stadium

Thurles is perfectly in between Cork and Clare and is quite easy for any in both counties to get to.
while i dont know what map of ireland you are looking at but my map tells me limerick is in between cork and clare and thurles is further away,

its not just simply Cork prefer thurles but other counties do as well.
that still dont explain why cork is getting quarter finals

eh like ormond i have to question what map you are using as according to my map the gaelic grounds is actually in limerick. Nobody has a problem with dublin playing all bar one of their games in croke park which is actually (and not basically in dublin)

I mean that the Gaelic Grounds are very close to the majority of the population of Clare. It was a fairly straightforward remark.

Plenty people have a problem with Dublin playing so many games in Croke Park. I don't know where you've been for the past few years if you think that.

Likewise if we lose we would have a long way to travel to Cork..

fair point you are correct on that - i think the fact that limerick is closer to clare than thurles makes it the better choice of venue, same for quarter finals last year clare v glaway should have been limerick and waterford v wexford in kilkenny

In my opinion the All Ireland QF should rotate every year, i always thought it was unfair for thurles to always have QF even when Tipp where playing in them, maybe next year hold it in Limerick then maybe Galway, then back to Thurles then Cork again etc, maybe even have it in Croker the odd year

PyatPree (Cork) - 19/06/2017 13:32:25    2001814

The simple answer is that it is an exceptional year with the stadium being opened. The big question would be whether Cork got these games every year and if so I would agree it would be very unfair.

On your point regarding this final, I think Thurles is the ideal venue. Limerick, although you seem to be impervious to previous comments is quite literally down the road to Clare. Have another look at that map.

Anyway, I understand your frustration and the Cork v Clare game should have been in Limerick. However, I feel the usual home and away agreements counties have are the best in terms of logistics. Two teams travelling does not make sense when it can be avoided.

is there something wrong with Nowlan Park for a QF

They should indeed. Instead of saying they'll always be in Thurles or Cork say. They could be played where is the most convenient for the participating counties.

Could even still go for double headers in Thurles if it were the likes of Kilkenny/Clare/Cork/Waterford/Limerick involved.

Otherwise stand alone fixtures in suitable venues.

Could be used for a stand alone 1/4 final between say Wexford and Waterford/Tipp

A good idea for All Ireland QF's in both codes

Let co.boards, towns bid for them in advance so for instance

Casement Park could get them one year, then fans would know in advance and plan a trip around the weekend.

Killarney,Nowlan Park,Castlebar,Galway be all excellent venues for a festival of football/hurling in the height of summer.

I think the main problem is the wasted a huge of gaa/taxpayers money on a big stadium in Cork that was not needed. So now the have to fix games for it even if it is a unsuitable venue for it. There is some talk of cork getting a football quarter final which could mean some county having to travel down from ulster, connacht or north leinster to Cork to play kerry or cork. Alot of county grounds are underused
