I don't see a lot of Gaelic on Hoganstand. The GAA is supposed to promote Gaeilge. So cad é an Scéal? Lets try and see more posters using our native tongue. Slán galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2519 - 16/10/2016 19:56:12 1926706 Link 2 |

Mise freisin. galwayford, thank you for posting this. How about a thread in Irish therefore? And any topic can be discussed on it? Riail amháin afach; ní cheadófaí daoine a cháineadh as earráidí nó botúin gramadaigh nó litrithe; tá roinnt suíomh ar chuid eile den idirlíon le haghaidh na craice seo. So... who wants to start it? Let's be real, not many can speak irisk, I can't, I only know the basics like everyone else, most people here on this page who wrote in irish probably used google translate, I think blame our education system on how irish is thought, you'd think learning irish for 12 years we would all speak it, I did spanish for 3 years and can speak more words than irish, the way we teach irish needs to change rebelfan (Cork) - Posts: 70 - 17/10/2016 11:40:54 1926878 Link 1 |

Well said If the current methods were of any use we'd all be leaving school fluent in the language The current approach is not working and has failed many generations of Irish people After 12 years you should be fluent I did higher French way back when and enjoyed the language, if I had of had the option I would have preferred to solely concentrate on French I see the cultural merit in continuing to encourage young Irish people to learn the language but the current educational methods/ model is poor. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 17/10/2016 12:57:35 1926916 Link 0 |
I didn't use Google Translate. I don't think gotmilk did because the words are spelled more phonetically, and it makes sense. Similarly, I don't think MesAmis used Google Translate either, because it also makes sense. Google Translate is a bit awful (but we'd figure it out). I agree, the education system is awful. If you study German, you learn that it has masculine and feminine genders (and neuter) and that is has a genitive case (and other cases). How many Irish school-leavers know that Irish has masculine and feminine and a genitive case? I think the teaching of Irish needs to start from scratch when you hit first year, so that all the grammatical stuff will be re-learned at the same time as the grammar of French/German/etc. So... use the old thread or create a new one? :D Tacaí Liatroma (Leitrim) - Posts: 1030 - 17/10/2016 13:30:33 1926935 Link 0 |
