Limerick hurling - not as good as people may think

(Oldest Posts First)

John Allen insists that playing in Division 1B leaves Limerick at a distinct disadvantage. Surely you are where you are because you aren't good enough to compete at the highest level! Why weren't they promoted to 1A if they are that good?

We were promoted to the top division but the rules were changed and we were kept in the second tier. This year Clare were much fitter in the spring and deservedly won

Once again Limericks best chance of silverwear this year is the Munster Senior FOOTBALL title
but it would appear that ship has sailed :(
Forget the hurling. Every year that they have something tangible, something that might progress, they find a way to blow it.
Unbelievable Jeff!

Tipp by 10 this Sunday :(

I would be in agreement with John Allen, Limerick have good hurlers and they will be a decent team again if they can hold it together

Allen stated that ALL teams in 1B were at a disadvantage facing into the championship and not just Limerick. People in Limerick know how good (or not) our hurling team is and where we stand in the pecking order. We actually are in a better place then we were 10 years ago. Our good U 21's then were put straight into the senior team almost to a man, where as now we have a reasonable amount of established seniors and adding the young lads from last years U21 team will be done in a more controlled fashion. Like many a county we live in hope but I am looking forward to next Sunday just as much as I have since the 70's. Munster championship days are special.

Think most of the teams in 1B need to be realistic, Kilkenny, Tipp and Cork would probably hockey them.

In fairness they were kinda promoted but then the GAA, in a classic GAA move, changed the format.

Limerick hurlers are decent but young. They need time.

If they're to stick with this system, maybe have the runners up in division 1b play the 2nd from bottom team in 1a, intrduce the possibility of a 2 up/2 down system.

So if that was to have happened this year, for example, Clare would still have automatically been promoted and gone into a league semi-final, and Dublin would have still been automatically relegated. But Galway and Limerick would've played a relegation/promotion play-off. If this was the case, relegation might not be the disaster it currently is, as teams could bounce back quicker, and even if you finish 2nd, you still get a league game against a top division team.
This could be done throughout the divisions, its too easy for teams to get stuck in a division with 1 up/1down, it benefits everybody if there's more mobility. Teams like Westmeath need to be given better opportunities to progress.

The league position of a county in gaelic games is meaningless.

I totally agree with you arock.

Thats why Kilkennys position is so delicately balanced as the whole country thinks they have the All-Ireland won already.

Even Vincent Hogan on the Sunday Independent is giving out the All-Star awards in May, as Bob Dylan would sing oh! the seasons thay are a changing!

Well except down in the home of hurling of course.

Once again at the start of the league you said Tipp were all out to win it and when they didnt you say its meaningless, just like Snuf saying Dublin would win 100% of national titles and when he released Dublin weren't going to win ether of the league titles said they didn't want to win them! Also Bob Dylan sant The Times they are a changing not the seasons

This year will tell a lot about Limerick. They aren't All-Ireland contenders but they had a 2 pt lead against Waterford last year in injury time and they'll only know themselves how they failed to beat Dublin in the All-Ireland Q/F despite giving them a 3 goal headstart.

However, they have seemed to stall under John Allen, their Div 1B results were mediocre and they let slip a heavy lead at home to Clare in the league final.

They need at least one significant scalp this summer, they might have to get it through the qualifiers though.

People should lay off this young Limerick team, they need time as as it was stated above. They had to rebuild and are still on a learning curve. Limerick hurling is in a better place than it has been in a long time, they have good under age teams and this looks good for the future, I for one would love to see Limerick land an All Ireland in a few years time.

Yeah Limerick are still young and in a similar rebuilding phase to ourselves and Clare, these things take time and I'd hope that say in 5 years Limerick will be much more competitive, as I hope Wexford Clare etc will be too.
