Yes and his autobiography is being published by Harper-Collins so no inside information there, his name was out there for months just that auntie i.e the BBC couldn't prevent it becoming public Knowledge, pity the same judge couldn't sit on the Iraq inquiry

He was caught speaking on camera by a Dutch/German motoring show 3/4 years ago, and it's been fairly common knowledge since then. Just all the newspapers etc agreed that it would serve no purpose to break the myth.
Obviously once Collins was about to go public himself there was no point in them keeping silent.
Collins has already been replaced by the BBC, and there is a strong possibility that they are going to sue him for breach of his confidentiality agreement.

Similar happend with the original Stig a few years ago (Perry McCarthy), although he agreed it with the BBC in advance, and they "killed off" his Black Stig on the show.

Will be interesting to see if they change the Stig character (go with different coloured suit, etc) like they did when Collins started, or if they maintain that it is the same character.

It definitely hasnt been "common" knowledge for 3 years, they were more like conspiracy theories. Kinda ruins the Stig tho, dosen't it? Unless they deny it completely, which is something Jeremy might do.

All you had to do was search on the internet. Collins was named as the Stig on numerous websites approx 3 years ago. There was a Dutch/German TV show which showed clips of him speaking (with the mask on) and he was identified on numerous motoring forums after that. Check youtube, there's been a video doing the rounds of this for quite a while.

In addition to that, when the UK health & safety authority published the report into Hammond's big crash (report was published in either 06/07) they named Collins as a high-performance driver working closely with Top Gear.
Susie Stoddard named him as the Stig in an interview a few years ago.

There were many theories that he isn't the only Stig, with 3/4 others also playing the role depending on scheduling, but the dispute with Harper-Collins seems to have put that theory to bed.
