United Ireland? Yes or No

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

This issue has been brought up in another thread, but there seems to be some ambiguity over it.I thought since we have people from all over the country on this forum then maybe we could have a vote on the matter. It is my own personal wish to see a united Ireland someday, and I hope it will be occur in a peaceful way.I know there are many other things that would have to be dealt with in tandem with such an event, but thats for another day. What I would like to uncover here is the gut feelings of the people of this country in relation to this issue. As I said already lets leave the finer details for another day.In other words vote with your heart only,a simple yes or no.

My own vote.

Yes.

How can it be a simple yes or no
Its alright saying the finer point of the detail can be sorted out another day - but what about the fundamental points

1. If the 1,000,000 unionists agree
2. And If the UK provide £100 billion in funding plus agree to fund the the Public sector bill for 50 years

Well then

Yes

In principle I would like to see it happen, but it won't ever happen. Its way too expensive and a load of jobs will be lost in the public sector in the north. I don't think even a lot of catholics in the north want a united ireland. Also a load of people down south couldn't be bothered about the north. Both sides are as bad as each other. The unionists and loyalists would go mad in any event. Its just not worth the hassle.

We have seen huge strides in the past decade , people sitting against from each other and in dialoge. It all boils down to money and Ireland is marketed as an Island and not 2 septerate countries. I cant for the life of me understand why people up there think they are British , because the rest of the Kingdom consider them to be Irish.

My first post was serious - Which part do you disagree with
As regards destroying the thread I think you will find that it was you that ruined it with a wind up comment (8 - years) I only presume it was a wind up -
As regards this being a serious thread - How can it be serious if it is limited to a yes or no answer.

OK dell

If its serious debate you want
You feel we can have a united Ireland in the next eight years

1. How to you propose dealing with the wishes of the 1m northern Ireland people who want to remain in the UK - what will change their mind in the next eight years
2. We already have a bloated public sector in the south - a united Ireland creates a duplication - We can't pay for the tens of thousands in the UK as the money comes from London - Do we put 100 thousand odd people on the dole
3. Th south is already almost broke - The second strongest econmy in the world in 1990 (germany) were in recession for nearly 15 years to absorb the cost of east Germany - Do you feel that in the next eight years our economy can absorb a 50% increase in its population from by taking over a state that is its own right bankrupt

As regards the opening posters comment - Of course the majorty of people will say yes - Why not ask if I want to be a professional sportstar witha €100m in the bank with an entourage of super models - The answer is YES but it aint going to happen anytime soon

Omar d, you identify a wind up and then fall for it with a rant. That's clever. Also, how exactly is 1.5 million people a 50% increase of our population? Population of the republic is 4.5 million.

I'm sick of saying this: reunification of our island will NOT be paid for by the Irish tax payer. It will be a slow process and may not be completed in my lifetime (i'm 25) but the wheels for reunification were set in motion by the good friday agreement. The EU, the UK and Ireland together will foot the bill. I predict that in another 50 years that unionist opposition will not be as strong as it is now. It has already become less extreme than in carson's day. Hell, these lads were fighting beside us in 1798!!! The reunification is not only inevitable - it is already happening....devolution of justice was a huge step away from UK and toward ireland.
At the end of the day, a welsh man calls himself welsh, a scots calls himself a scot, english are english - n irish unionist are the only crowd calling themselves british. The rest of the UK calls them irish!!!!!
Estimates:(i use religion as a rough guide) Protestants - 52%. Catholics 44%. Around 4% are foreign to the north. I would estimate 30 years and we can start seriously considering a referendum.

Finally, to answer the thread: A thousand time YES. Éireann go brách.
