Kildare hurlers bringing in outside players

Kildare hurlers have decided to bring in 5 outside players this year to play with their team. Should other counties follow suit, reduce their underage coaching and just bring in outsiders from Limerick, Kilkenny and Tipperary too ? To be fair, its hard to say they are making strides, when players from Kildare don't want to play for the county, which Joe bemoaned here: http://www.hoganstand.com/hurling/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=250289 I think they are absolutley right to avail of the permitted services of players from other counties. But if management can't get hurlers from Kildare to play for the county, it doesn't bode well for the future. according to todays limerick leader (page 3 of sports section) two limerick lads richie ryan and david reidy are to play with kildare, the article says richie transferred to naas and played for them in SHC final. Reidy will be a permit player and will continue to play for drom athlacca down here, he was on senior panel last year and came on against westmeath in championship-article does not say where he living, Both played minor for limerick janesboro (Limerick) - Posts: 1502 - 19/01/2017 20:23:09 1947148 Link

Hurling in Kildare in terms of popularity comes after football, horse racing, soccer and is probably on par with rugby. He hurled in the league for Tipp last year. Kildare will struggle this year without Gerry Keegan who would hold his own against any hurler in Ireland. Wasn't any big fuss when Tipperary took Conor Kenny from Kildare? And Adrian Ryan. Conor's brother Niall is gone in with Tipp U21s this year. All those lads played Senior with Kildare before Tipp took them. Waterford took Jack Fagan from Meath and instead of starting for Meath in Croke Park he was a sub for the Waterford U21s Works both ways.... How would interest in horse racing make any difference? Quaid asked 67 players to appear for county trials, 24 turned up. What else was he meant to do? As he said himself, no Kildare hurler is going to lose out as the only ones interested are already on the panel. It looks terrible, hurling in the county won't progress without homegrown talent. What I mean is that the hurlers from the weaker counties should still be able to play with their native county. Just like it works the other way around for permit players.
