The world's first Poc Fada golf course was opened at the Deer Park Golf complex at Howth Castle yesterday.

The new sport combines golf and hurling, and was the brainchild of Julian Gaisford-St. Lawrence, whose family built Howth Castle. The sport is recognised by the GAA and will be run under the stewardship of former Dublin hurling manager Humphrey Kelleher, who is the chairman of the National Poc Fada committee.

Dublin hurling star Liam Rushe was on hand to perform the launch, which coincides with the staging of the All-Ireland Poc Fada championships in the Cooley Mountains this weekend.
