Mickey McVeigh involved with Monaghan senior county management team Mickey McVeigh the former Down, Ulster and Ireland goalkeeper recently joined the Monaghan senior football management team. The Castlewellan clubman will be the Monaghan squad goalkeeping coach for this coming championship season - a post held by former Cavan and Bailieboro' Shamrocks goalkeeper Paul O'Dowd last season. County U-21 defender received hefty suspension Mayobridge and Down U-21 county footballer, Conor Garvey has been suspended for eight weeks by the central competitions committee in Croke Park arising out of an incident in Down's All-Ireland U-21 championship semi-final defeat against Kildare in Pairc Tailteann, Navan. Burren duo out of Ulster SFC clash with Tyrone Ross Carr and the Down senior football team management recently suffered a double blow as they continue to prepare for their Ulster SFC opener against Tyrone in Healy Park, Omagh. The Burren duo of Ciaran McGovern and Declan Rooney are both injured at the present time, and won't be fit for the clash with the reigning provincial champions. Bryansford plans on hold Planning permission for the 15-acre site purchased by the Down Co. Board for the new Bryansford Sports Centre has been refused. It is likely that an appeal will be made and revised plans submitted for the development in the coming weeks. Sean Og McAteer is the front-runner for new Down full-time Secretary Down Co. Board GAA will have a new full-time Co. Secretary from the end of June. Sean Og McAteer currently the county administration manager, has been offered the full-time paid position of Co. Secretary, following interviews which were held recently in Croke Park. Croke Park notified the Down Co. Board of their decision last week. S.F. challenge game with Cork in the offing on Saturday week Beaten All-Ireland SFC finalists last season, Cork are coming to the Carrickdale Hotel, Dundalk for a players bonding week-end from May 23-25 to prepare for the Munster SFC campaign. They have asked the Down Co. Board for a challenge game on Saturday week, May 24 at a venue to be announced. This would be an excellent challenge match for the Mourne side ahead of their big championship clash with Tyrone in Healy Park, Omagh in the coming weeks. County senior defender breaks ankle in club game Talented Down senior football defender, Darren O'Hanlon has been ruled out of the forthcoming Ulster SFC campaign with the Mourne county after breaking his ankle in a club game with Ballymartin last week. This is a setback to the county squad and manager Ross Carr as he prepares for the big championship clash with Tyrone in Healy Park, Omagh in the coming weeks. It is also a major disappointment for the player himself who was hoping to figure in Ross Carr's plans in this season's Ulster senior football championship campaign.
