Michael Davitt GAC club notes

September 08, 2014

Preparation work is currently taking place to get the drive way and car park ready for tarmacing. The tarmac contract is currently out to tender and will hopefully take place in October. With such extensive grounds the priorities are the main entrance and drive, upper car park and along the side of the hall. It is hoped we could get the lower car park done but the club will have to raise a significant amount of money to allow this phase to take place at this moment in time.

The senior hurlers were in action in the semi final of the championship against Kevin Lynches at Owenbeg on Saturday past. Playing with the advantage of the wind in the first half the Lynches stormed into an eight point lead with Swatragh score coming from a Ruairi Convery free. Another couple of free from Big R left the Davitts trailing 0-12 to 0-03 at the interval. An improved second half performance from Swatragh wasn't enough as Dungiven won 0-19 to 0-09.

The minor footballers took on Glen in the semi final of their championship at Moneymore on Monday night past. Glen notched the first 2 two points before Lorcan McWilliams opened the Davitts account with a point from the right wing. Patrick Kearney pointed from play in response to two Glen points. The Wattys registered their first goal with a turnover and lightening fast counter attack to see Danny Tallon finish a move he started. Swatragh replied with points from play by John Walsh and Niall McAtamney and a Francis Kearney free left the score 1-06 to 0-06 to Glen at the break. The Davitts began the the second half with real intent and put Glen on the back foot immediately. John Walsh scored his second point and a monster long range effort from a dead ball by Francis Kearney left the minimum between the sides. Lorcan McWilliams equalised matters moments later with a audacious effort from close to the right hand sideline. Glen needed something special to halt the Swatragh momentum and they had that on the bench as Conor Glass was introduced and within five minutes he had set up one point and scored a goal himself. Lorcan McWilliams, in nearly a mirror image of his previous effort pointed from the left sideline this time along with a Francis Kearney free saw Glen's lead reduced to two points. But Glen hit back with a third goal to arrest the Swa comeback. Points from Niall McAtmaney, a Hugh Thomas '45 and Fintan McGurk helped reduce the arrears to four points but as Swatragh chased and gambled towards the end Glen picked off their scores to win 3-15 to 0-14.
