St. Malachy's GAC Castledawson club notes

September 02, 2014

Castledawson travelled to Celtic Park on Saturday the 30th to take on newly crowned Intermediate League winners Glen in the quarter final of the championship.

When the two teams met in the league at Maghera back in May the home team totally dominated the game winning by fourteen points so they carried the favourite tag going into this match.
A late throw in of 4:00pm and Castledawson took the lead from a Niall McNicholl free, Glen responded immediately with a goal off the inside of the post and almost had another, a great start to get the supporters sitting up; another three points in quick succession and Castledawson are back in the lead and then the first of the two goals and what a beauty it was; Martin Heaney away out on the corner picked out Aidan Keenan in the centre, a perfect pass across the defence a little shimmy from the youngster goalie wrong footed bang, Castledawson 1-04 Glen 1-00. Glen got one point back before goal number two this time Aidan supplied the cross and Martin done the business with a little back hand flick there was no looking back the game was Castledawson's to lose. The defence with big Neill shouting instructions at the back and led superbly by captain Paddy Henry in the centre smothered the Glen attack as they burst forward and wing half forwards Ruari Shivers and Aidie Bradleys drifted back to gather the loose in and around mid-field where Aidan McElhone was in majestic form. Niall McNicholl led the forward line with some great points from frees and play and the inside duo of Aidan and Martin were always a threat. Final Score: 2-11 to 1-08.
