Michael Davitt GAC club notes

September 01, 2014

The annual draw for All Ireland final weekend getaways took place on Saturday night. Congratulations to the winners who were Margaret Burke from Draperstown and Sean McGlone from Lissan. Massive thank you to all club members who sold their allocation (and more in many cases) and continue to make this a significant annual fundraiser.

All Ireland hurling final tickets will be distributed in the meetings rooms at the club on Thursday night at 9pm. The senior hurlers take on Kevin Lynches in the semi final  of the championship this Saturday at 3.30pm in Owenbeg.

The senior footballers exited the championship on Friday night past against Dungiven at Owenbeg. Liam Kearney opened the scoring from the throw in before Dungiven notched over three points. Francis Kearney collected a long ball near the end line, beat his man and palmed an inviting ball across the goal mouth for Seamus Kearney to fist to the net. A second Liam Kearney point from play plus a pointed free by James Kearney left Swatragh 1-03 to 0-03 ahead. Dungiven dominated the final 10 minutes and scored four points without reply before the interval to lead by a point. A couple of early James Kearney points in the second half were in reply to two from Dungiven to leave the Surs one point ahead. The remainder of the match was a tale of goal opportunities with the Dungiven keeper saving James Kearney's effort and Brian Diamond's attempt coming off the underside of the bar and Dungiven netting twice to win out on a scoreline of 3-14 to 1-06.

The U16 footballers took on Magherafelt in the first round of their championship on Wednesday 20th of August at Lavey. A first half goal blitz from the Rossas knocked the Davitts for six and they never recovered. An improved second half performance, with chief resistance coming from the McWilliams twins Oisin and Lorcan, saw a reduction in the half time deficit but could not eat into it significantly to affect the final outcome as Magherafelt won on a scoreline of 7-13 to 2-08.

Also at Lavey that night the U12s took on their hosts in the quarter final of the U12 mini league. A very big impressive Lavey side were hard to resist especially in the first half but a spirited second half from the young Davitts saw them gain parity in the second period. Final score Lavey 2-20 Swatragh 3-03.

The U16 hurlers defeated Banagher 2-12 to 1-05 in round 7 of the league.
