Michael Davitt GAC Swatragh club notes

August 04, 2014
The senior footballers began their senior championship campaign against Magherafelt at Dean McGlinchey Park on Sunday past. The Davitts fielded three championship debutants with Niall McAtamney and both twin Kearney's Patrick and Francis starting. The game got under way in sunny conditions but soon deteriorated to torrential rain along with thunder and lightening and correlated with Swatragh's prospects in this game. The Rossa's had registered 1-04, with the goal coming from Shane Heavron, before the Davitts troubled the scoreboard operator in the 20th minute with a free from Ruairi Convery. Magherafelt led at interval 1-06 to 0-02 but Swatragh started the second half a bit brighter with points from play from Patrick and James Kearney. But the Rossas dominated the next 15 minutes and kept the scoreboard ticking over until the end of the match winning out 1-13 to 0-04. Swatragh drew Foreglen in the qualifiers in a repeat of the 2012 intermediate final.

The minor footballers safely negotiated the first round of their championship defeating Steelstown at Banagher on Monday past. A cagey first 15 minutes saw the sides level at 0-03 apiece but Swatragh took control of the second quarter to lead by five points at the break. A goal early in the second half from Fintan McGurk put real daylight between the sides and the Davitts held Brian Ogs at arms length for the remainder of the match to win 1-13 to 0-05. Next up is parish rivals Slaughtneil in the quarter finals on Monday 11th of August at a venue TBC.

The U14 footballers exited the championship against Glen in an action packed game at Slaughtneil. The young Davitts went into an early lead thanks to a goal from JP McGuigan and further extended their lead to five points before Glen began their fightback with a flurry of goals. A litany of chances from Swatragh went abegging before JP scored his second goal but Glen managed to cancel that out straight away with their own three pointer. An excellent point from the right wing by Declan Quinn left the scores at interval 4-03 to 2-04 to Glen. The Wattys extended their lead at the start of the second half to nine points before Swatragh staged a comeback. Goals from Sean Og O'Kane (two), JP McGuigan and Dermot McKeown saw the sides level once again. A magnificent pointed effort from Dermot McKeown, as he cut in from the right wing and curled the ball over with his left foot, left Swatragh a point to the good. But unfortunately Glen scored two quick fire goals before Barry Walsh reduced the arrears to two points but that was the last score of the game as Glen won out on a scoreline of 7-08 to 7-06. The U14 management would like to thank the players, parents and club for their support throughout the year.

The U12 footballers maintained their impressive form by defeating Kilrea 1-06 to 1-03 and drawing with Magherafelt 0-03 each at home on Thursday night past. They followed this up with a victory against Craigbane on Saturday morning 4-05 to 2-01.

The club is hoping to organise a charity cycle in association with Carn Wheelers later in the year. There would be three routes involved with a novice, intermediate and experienced circuit to cover all levels of ability. We are aware that other clubs are organising their own cycle dates so we do not wish to clash. The initial date would be early September so that would give us 12 weeks to get organised. Please contact the club if you have any ideas or suggestions for dates and routes.

Club lotto numbers on Saturday past were 5/9/12 and 19. There were no jackpot winners but lucky dip winners were Bridget McLarnon and Christopher Glass. Jackpot currently stands at £2900. Bingo takes place every Sat night at 9pm with the jackpot at £2500 for 42 numbers.
