April 24, 2017

Bhulf Tòn give a guard of honour for county champions Simonstown Gaels before the start of the Division 1 FL game in Kilberry

Wolfe Tones 2-11 Simonstown Gaels 2-07

Simonstown 'Meath County Champions' entered the pitch to a guard of honour from the Wolfe Tones team before throw in.

The game was played under perfect conditions with Simonstown Gaels missing some important squad players. However it was the Gaels who started brighter with Chris O'Neill opening the scoring with a well taken goal after just 2 minutes. Simonstown added to their tally with scores from play by Padraig McKeever and Shane O'Rourke. Score after a great 7 minute period was Simonstown 1-2 Wolfe Tones 0-0. Wolfe Tones entered the scoring after 9 minutes with a trademark 45 from Cian Ward. Brian McGrath responded with a great score from the edge of the sideline to leave Simonstown 5 points up after 10 minutes.

Simonstown Gaels 'Shane O'Rourke' scored a great goal on the 17th minute mark to leave the score at 2-3 to 0-2. Wolfe Tones staged a very good comeback with the Ward brothers playing a central role. Wolfe Tones first and second goal were very similiar with both scored from Fiachra Ward. For the first goal Niall O'Reilly set up Fiachra Ward for a simple palm in after 25 minutes. The scoreline now read Simonstown 2-3 Wolfe Tones 1-5. Cian Ward set up Fiachra Ward for the Tones 2nd goal and it was a carbon copy of the first with Fiachra palming in from point blank range again. The scoreline at the end of an entertaining first half was Simonstown 2-3 Wolfe Tones 2-5.

The second half in truth was dominated by the Tones with Simonstown scoring their first point since the 17th minute in the 50th minute. This lack of scoring hurt the Gaels and gave the Tones the upper hand. Cian Ward scored 2 points from a dead ball to leave the score after 50 minutes Simonstown 2-3 Wolfe Tones 2-7. Podge McKeever scored 2 points in the remaining 10 minutes but the Tones were able to get crucial points from the Shepherd brothers to leave no doubt about the scoreline.
