"He led them to the water and they refused to drink"

Ger Loughnane says anyone who takes the vacant Galway hurling manager's job "needs their head examined".

Anthony Cunningham yesterday announced his inevitable exit from the Tribe helm in the face of a player revolt and Clare's All-Ireland winning boss of 1995 and '97 has leapt to his defence:

"Anthony Cunningham is easily the best manager Galway have had since Cyril Farrell," he writes in The Irish Daily Star. "But the Galway players think they know better, think they know it all, and have forced him out the door.

"In this year's [All-Ireland] final, Galway were three points clear at the break and it was up to those who think they're leaders to drive on. They didn't. They failed dismally and have taken the cowardly route of blaming Cunningham.

"He led them to the water and they refused to drink. Anyone looking in from outside will regard this as completely inexplicable.

"The difference between this and the Cork situation a few years ago was that Cork had earned the right to take a stand. No Galway player has earned that right.

"Once the players rose up, Cunningham's time was up. Anyone who takes the job now needs their head examined."
